Exodus 20:1-17 “And God spoke all these words, saying, "I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them, for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and the fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you, or your son, or your daughter, your male servant, or your female servant, or your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates. For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. Honor your father and your mother, that your days may be long in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. You shall not commit adultery. You shall not steal. You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. You shall not covet your neighbor's house; you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his male servant, or his female servant, or his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.”
[19:50]Deuteronomy 5:6-21 “I am the Lord your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the Lord your God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the fathers on the children to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing steadfast love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. You shall not take the name of the Lord your God in vain, for the Lord will not hold him guiltless who takes his name in vain. Observe the Sabbath day, to keep it holy, as the Lord your God commanded you. Six days you shall labor and do all your work, but the seventh day is a Sabbath to the Lord your God. On it you shall not do any work, you or your son or your daughter or your male servant or your female servant, or your ox or your donkey or any of your livestock, or the sojourner who is within your gates, that your male servant and your female servant may rest as well as you. You shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and the Lord your God brought you out from there with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm. Therefore the Lord your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. Honor your father and your mother, as the Lord your God commanded you, that your days may be long, and that it may go well with you in the land that the Lord your God is giving you. You shall not murder. And you shall not commit adultery. And you shall not steal. And you shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. And you shall not covet your neighbor's wife. And you shall not desire your neighbor's house, his field, or his male servant, or his female servant, his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor's.”
[20:52]Exodus 19:4-6 “You yourselves have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings and brought you to myself. Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, you shall be my treasured possession among all peoples, for all the earth is mine; and you shall be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation. These are the words that you shall speak to the people of Israel.”
[20:52]Observation questions
- What does Exodus 19 show that God had already done for Israel before giving the commandments, and how does that background shape the way the commandments are heard? [21:05]
- In Exodus 20 and Deuteronomy 5, which commandments focus mainly on outward actions, and which ones address the desires and attitudes within a person? [23:58]
- What examples of false witness beyond a courtroom setting are identified, and what kinds of harm can they cause? [24:38]
- According to the command against coveting, what kinds of people, possessions, and relationships are included in the warning not to desire what belongs to a neighbor? [26:22]
Interpretation questions
- Why does it matter that the Ten Commandments are given within a covenant relationship with the God who had already delivered and sustained Israel, rather than as a way to earn God’s love? [20:52]
- How does understanding false witness as gossip, rumor, and damaging speech deepen the command’s meaning for daily relationships and for the life of a community? [25:07]
- Why can false accusations and harmful stories be especially dangerous for poor and marginalized people? What responsibilities does this place on a community that wants to protect its neighbors? [25:24]
- How does coveting turn another person’s blessing into a reason for discontent, and why can that discontent lead toward dishonest or harmful actions? [27:18]
Application questions
- Which one of the Ten Commandments feels most relevant to a current struggle, relationship, habit, or decision? What would it look like to treat that commandment as a guide toward life rather than merely a rule to avoid breaking? [29:06]
- When has grief, misplaced desire, fear, or a reckless choice left you feeling spiritually lost? How might God be calling you back through the support of fellow travelers in the community? [22:06]
- Think about recent conversations, texts, social-media posts, or prayer requests. Where might gossip, assumptions, or an unverified story be diminishing someone made sacred by God? What could truthful and loving speech look like instead? [24:38]
- Is there someone whose success, possessions, opportunities, or relationships regularly stir up comparison in you? What gift from God can you name with gratitude instead of measuring your life against that person’s life? [27:33]
- What would change in your home, workplace, friendships, or church if success were measured less by competition and more by gratitude, contentment, and the ability to celebrate others? [28:32]
- Where do you need to receive God’s forgiveness and begin trying again, trusting that God does not abandon wandering people but continues to lead them home? [29:26]
