Counter Culture - How to live our lives

Ephesians 4:25-32 lands with a big “therefore,” so Paul ties practical living to everything Christ has already done. The passage is not a nice little list of religious manners. It is life stuff, daily living, character, speech, anger, work, sharing, bitterness, kindness, compassion, and forgiveness. Paul puts a massive challenge in front of the church, and it is easy to read it and laugh, “Well, that’s easy then, just sort your lives out and live a perfect life.”

God is not talking about people being naturally nicer than others. Christ is dealing with discipleship, walking with God, knowing him, and being transformed. The real “why” is Christ himself. The communion table gives the reason. Christ has bought his people at a price, and that price should get into attitude, thinking, lifestyle, breathing, and twenty four seven living. The old life is not the final word, because anyone in Christ is a new creation, but the old can still hang on and limit what God is doing.

Paul’s list is full of “don’ts,” but it is also full of “dos.” Falsehood is put off so truth can be spoken. Stealing is put off so useful work can create something to share. Unwholesome talk is put off so words can build people up according to their needs. Bitterness, rage, anger, brawling, slander, and malice are put away so kindness, compassion, and forgiveness can take their place. God does not just empty a life. God fills it with something better.

Truth shows how practical this is. Lying damages the liar, the deceived person, the body, the mind, and the relationship. Honesty lowers stress, strengthens connection, and lets trust breathe again. Yet honesty still needs wisdom, because raw truth without tact can knock people down instead of building them up. Paul’s command is not merely “tell the truth,” but speak in a way that gives grace and helps others.

The “how” is not willpower on its own. Christ’s example matters. The Word of God must dwell richly, because Scripture cannot shape a person who does not know it. The Holy Spirit guides into truth, speaks with personal presence, and often nudges before the person even realizes what has happened. Healthy fruit comes from deep roots.

Philippians 3 gives the mindset. Paul counts everything loss because knowing Christ is worth more. Paul presses on to take hold of that for which Christ Jesus took hold of him. The Christian life is not measured by natural ability, but by grace, by the communion table, and by living up to what has already been attained in Christ.
