Day 1: The Danger of Taking Shortcuts Instead of Trusting God

Sin is often rooted in our impatience and desire to take shortcuts, rather than waiting on God's perfect timing and plan. Like Jacob and Esau, we are tempted to take matters into our own hands, believing that we know better or that God is too slow to act. But every shortcut comes with a cost, and when we choose our own way over God's, we risk missing out on His best for us. Waiting on the Lord requires trust, humility, and obedience, even when it feels difficult or countercultural. [47:54]

Genesis 25:29-34 (ESV)
Once when Jacob was cooking stew, Esau came in from the field, and he was exhausted. And Esau said to Jacob, “Let me eat some of that red stew, for I am exhausted!” (Therefore his name was called Edom.) Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright now.” Esau said, “I am about to die; of what use is a birthright to me?” Jacob said, “Swear to me now.” So he swore to him and sold his birthright to Jacob. Then Jacob gave Esau bread and lentil stew, and he ate and drank and rose and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

Day 2: God’s Grace Remains Even When We Fail

Even when we make mistakes, take shortcuts, or act out of selfishness, God’s grace is still present and active in our lives. Jacob and his family were deeply flawed—full of favoritism, deceit, and brokenness—yet God did not abandon them. Instead, He continued to pursue, forgive, and work through them, showing that His grace is greater than our failures. No matter how far we fall, God’s love and grace are available to us if we turn back to Him. [59:45]

Day 3: Shortcuts and Sin Always Come with Consequences

While God’s grace is abundant, our choices still have real consequences. Jacob received the blessing he schemed for, but it cost him dearly—his family was shattered, he lost his home, and he lived in fear and regret. Sin may promise quick rewards, but it always leaves a trail of pain, broken relationships, and missed blessings. Choosing obedience over shortcuts protects us and those we love from unnecessary heartache. [01:01:50]

Now Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing with which his father had blessed him, and Esau said to himself, “The days of mourning for my father are approaching; then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

Day 4: God’s Plan Does Not Require Deception or Manipulation

God’s purposes are never accomplished through dishonesty, manipulation, or compromise. Jacob and Rebecca believed they needed to help God’s promise along, but God’s will would have been fulfilled in His way and time. When we try to force outcomes through our own schemes, we step outside of God’s will and bring harm to ourselves and others. True obedience means trusting that God’s strategy is always best and never requires us to hurt or deceive. [01:07:44]

May God give you of the dew of heaven and of the fatness of the earth and plenty of grain and wine. Let peoples serve you, and nations bow down to you. Be lord over your brothers, and may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be everyone who curses you, and blessed be everyone who blesses you!

Day 5: Waiting on the Lord Is the Path to True Blessing

Though waiting is hard and often goes against our instincts, it is the path God calls us to walk. His timing is not our timing, but it is always right. When we wait on the Lord, we demonstrate faith, patience, and a willingness to let Him lead. The narrow path may be uphill and slow, but it leads to lasting blessing, peace, and fulfillment that shortcuts can never provide. [01:09:11]

Jacob, with the help of his mother Rebecca, schemed to secure the blessing that God had already promised him, rather than waiting on God’s timing. Grace is the thread that runs through these stories. Even when Jacob and Rebecca acted out of impatience and deceit, God did not abandon them. He allowed the consequences of their actions to unfold, but He remained faithful to His promises. That is the beauty of grace: God sticks with us, even when we break promises or turn away from Him. Yet, grace does not erase the consequences of our shortcuts. Jacob received the blessing, but his family was shattered, and he spent years in exile, separated from those he loved.

The challenge for us is to resist the urge to take shortcuts, especially when waiting on God feels difficult. God is not concerned with our happiness as much as our obedience. He calls us to trust Him, to wait on His timing, and to walk the narrow, often uphill path of faithfulness. When we do, we find that His way is always best, and His blessings are worth the wait.

“But the firstborn son, however, could forfeit it or he could sell it. And that's what Esau did with the birthright. And think, put yourself in Esau's place. He's hungry. He's tired. And he can't see the birthright right here. But he could see the soup. He could smell the seasoning. It was tangible. At this time in his life, the birthright was not tangible. So he swapped for a bowl of soup.”

“Years later, Jacob would be called Israel. And Israel became the father of 12 tribes. And one of those sons, Judah, was was a tribe. And guess what lineage came out of Judah? We call him the lion of Judah. And his name is Jesus Christ. Man, Esau walked away with a bowl of beans and a legacy that tells us, the Bible tells us in Hebrews 12:16, for one morsel of fool food sold his birthight. Esau took a shortcut.”

“But what I found was interesting was God let these deeds, these shortcuts unfold. He let them unfold. I'm going to tell you, don't miss this. If you don't miss anything at all, this is the moment that grace shows up. This is the moment when grace walks on stage. I mean, here's a family that's one spark away from an explosion. Brothers are are are fighting. Parents are playing favorites, but yet God is sticking with them. That is grace. I'm telling you guys, that stirs my spirit.”

“He kept chasing after me. He kept every time I turn away from him, he turned to me. That is grace. But that isn't saying there won't be any consequences. We there there will be consequences. Let's let's look at the boys. 41. What's verse 41 say? Esau held a grudge against Jacob because of the blessings his father had given him. He said to himself, "The days of my mourning for my father are near. Then I will kill my brother Jacob.”

“But buddy, it came with a cost. You may get what you want. You may get pleasure. You may get whatever you want, but it's going to come with a cost. If you take shortcuts, if it takes sin to get it, it's going to come with a cost. Jacob got a blessing, but his family was shattered. He didn't have a home. He ran for his life. Esau wanted to kill him. He had betrayed his father.”

“All because he took a shortcut. Listen, don't miss this. All because he couldn't wait. Or are you impatient when it comes to waiting on God? Are you impatient when it comes to waiting on anything? Jacob, this was all because he couldn't wait. Rebecca knew the promise. I know she told him. So, what shortcuts are you taking in real life? I had to look back here. What shortcuts am I taking?”

“You know, God has promised to give us all we need. Joy, hope, life, and and love. It's ours just for the asking. All we need to do is wait on God. Boy, he seems slow though, don't he? You know why? Because his timing is not the same as our timing. So we cut corners. We cheat on exams. We we we cheat on on taxes. We deceive with lies, exaggerations. We blow up facts. We drop names and work for the system.”

“Sometimes we think, "Well, God wants me to have this job. I'll just pad my resume, make myself look a little better. God wants me to be happy. He wants me to be happy. So, I'll divorce this woman and go with that woman. Because I just can't believe in a God that didn't want me to be happy. I'm telling you, God is not concerned about your happiness. He's concerned about our obedience.”

“He didn't call you and me to be happy. He called us to do right, to be obedient. You know, I know God wants me to tell the truth, but the truth could get me in trouble. I know every one of you struggle with this. A little lie won't hurt. Boy, do we justify our shortcuts, don't we?”

“There are no shortcuts with God. He don't need me and you to press the gas to hurry things up. He doesn't need help from you and me. Jacob and and and and Rebecca did not need to connive and to deceive. If God ordains it, if he wants it, it will happen. All they needed was to wait on the Lord.”

“God's plan is always best. God will never use deception or manipulation. His His strategy doesn't destroy people. His strategy doesn't require compromise. God doesn't hurt or belittle people. If you're if you're manipulative and you're doing any of those things to get your business going, then I'm here to tell you, you're not in God's will. If you're doing anything like that to get your kid on the on the best team or on a certain position, you ain't in God's will.”
