Conversations In The Dark Sermon

John 3 places a man in the dark and lets the light find him. Nicodemus has rank, title, education, influence, and religion, but the night around him shows the night inside him. The text does not say why he came out there, and that silence leaves room for the kind of searching a person cannot always name. The question is not whether the darkness is real. The question is, when the light has found a soul, what will that soul do with it?

Jesus meets Nicodemus without needing an appointment, a Zoom link, or anybody’s permission. God knows every breath, every move, every condition, and God has never seen a sinner He could not save, a problem He could not solve, or a place He could not occupy. Jesus specializes in bringing men and women who are lost in dark places into the light. It may not be until a person is found that the person even knows he was lost.

Darkness in John 3 is not just a nighttime setting. Darkness names sin, habits, attitudes, dispositions, and behaviors. Nicodemus represents the person who has reached the top and still feels something missing. Darkness tricks a person into thinking what is missing is more of what is already possessed. More title, more attention, more likes, more validation, more relationships, more position. But no human being and nothing in this world can give the significance that only the living God gives.

Jesus answers all of that striving with one word of necessity: “Ye must be born again.” Nicodemus calls Him Rabbi, but Jesus presses beyond compliment into surrender. Flesh can only produce flesh, but the Spirit gives birth to spirit. The Spirit moves like the wind, not because people make Him move, but because God moves according to His own will. A leaf caught in the wind does not control the wind. The leaf is carried by the wind.

The light in John 3 is stronger than the darkness because darkness cannot defeat darkness. Light reveals truth, sustains life, gives warmth, and penetrates what darkness tries to hide. Jesus is that light, brighter than the noonday sun, even when diagnosis, despair, fear, and death make the whole world feel dark. Wherever there is a shadow, there has to be light.

Nicodemus later stands closer to Jesus, and then appears with Joseph of Arimathea to claim the body of Christ. That night meeting in the dark becomes a life used by God. Surrender gives salvation in the Lord, and salvation gives success in the Lord, not success as applause, but usefulness in the hands of God.
