Paul’s closing words in Philippians 4 show what Christian contentment looks like when life gets hard. Paul rejoices over the Philippians’ gift, but he makes it clear that his peace was never hanging on whether money came through. Paul had learned how to be brought low and how to abound, how to have plenty and how to go hungry, because his circumstances did not get to control his interior life.

Contentment is not giving up, going numb, or saying, “Whatever, I don’t even care no more.” Contentment means sufficiency. It means that if God has somebody eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches, ramen noodles, or even dry bread, that person can still say, “It’s enough,” because God is the portion. Contentment means that money, health, marriage, children, and outward comfort may make life more pleasant, but none of them is the source of joy.

Covetousness stands on the other side of contentment. Hebrews says to be free from the love of money and content with what is present because God has said, “I will never leave you nor forsake you.” Jesus warns that life does not consist in the abundance of possessions. Money cannot give life, preserve life, or follow anybody out of this world. Money is a tool, like a hammer or screwdriver, but covetousness turns that tool into an idol.

Paul calls godliness with contentment “great gain.” Wealth itself is not evil, since Abraham and Job had wealth, but the love of money pierces people with many pangs and can pull them away from the faith. Wisdom, character, discipline, honesty, and good stewardship may produce wealth, but wealth must never become the thing a person chases or the thing upon which a person sets the heart.

Paul says he had to learn contentment, and that learning comes through Christ’s strength. Christ gives strength not only against discontentment, but also against envy, lust, anger, jealousy, and every sinful desire that rises in the heart. The Holy Spirit calls God’s people to quit pretending those desires are not there, confess them plainly, and ask God to create a clean heart and renew a steadfast spirit.

The Philippians’ gift becomes a fragrant offering, a sacrifice acceptable and pleasing to God. Their generosity is worship, and God promises to supply the needs of people who are not consumed with themselves but are concerned about meeting the needs of others.
