Day 1: When Idols Crumble, Steadfast Love Remains

Life’s golden calves—relationships, achievements, even religious rituals—promise security but leave us empty. Like the Israelites, we often cling to what glitters rather than the God who gives. Yet in our worst failures, when our makeshift idols lie shattered, God’s response isn’t rejection but revelation: He declares Himself merciful, gracious, and abounding in steadfast love. His commitment outlasts every disappointment. [47:26]

The Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness, keeping steadfast love for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin.” (Exodus 34:6-7, ESV)

Day 2: Coupons Expire, God’s Promises Don’t

We treat God’s love like a limited-time offer, doubting its validity when life feels unstable. But chesed isn’t a coupon with fine print—it’s an eternal vow. Unlike worldly security (finances, health, or relationships), God’s love withstands generations. He doesn’t love because we perform; He loves because He is love. Day 3: Bold Requests Meet Glorious Answers

Moses didn’t ask for easier circumstances or a better people—he asked for God’s glory. In our chaos, we often seek solutions when God offers His presence. Jesus, the Word made flesh, answers Moses’ request fully: God’s glory isn’t a distant spectacle but a person who dwells with us, full of grace and truth. [01:00:36]

Day 4: Love That Chooses When It Doesn’t Feel

Steadfast love isn’t a Hallmark emotion—it’s the gritty choice to serve when the couch calls, to forgive when bitterness feels justified. Like a marriage vow, chesed acts even when feelings waver. God’s love for Israel didn’t depend on their loyalty, and His love for us doesn’t rise and fall with our faithfulness. [55:25]

Little children, let us not love in word or talk but in deed and in truth. (1 John 3:18, ESV)

Day 5: Writing “Forever” Over Life’s Uncertainties

The psalmist rehearses God’s faithfulness not after the storm, but in it. Those bulletin questions—joys, chaos, hopes—aren’t meant to be answered alone. Every answer gets punctuated with “His steadfast love endures forever.” Whether your washer smokes or your dreams stall, this refrain turns anxiety into anthem. [01:03:47]

The steadfast love of God begins against the plain fact that life can be chaotic, busy, disappointing, and unpredictable. The tension between shaky circumstances and unfailing love exposes how easily good gifts get treated like they can give peace, hope, and security. Good gifts are not bad, but gifts cannot give what only the giver can give. People, money, plans, teams, and comfort all have conditions attached, and every one of them can be snatched away in a moment.

Exodus 33 and 34 place that truth right in the wreckage of Israel’s sin. The golden calf shows God’s people taking what God had given and turning it into an idol. Moses comes down with the Ten Commandments, sees the people worshiping a false god, and throws the tablets down in anger. Moses still intercedes, standing between the people and God, asking that God not remove his presence from them.

God answers Moses’ bold request, “Please show me your glory,” with a yes. The doubled name, “The Lord, the Lord,” sounds like God swearing by himself, saying that everything about to be revealed is true and certain. The words “merciful and gracious” come at the exact moment when God’s people had given him every reason to walk away. “Slow to anger” means God does not have a short fuse, and “abounding in steadfast love and faithfulness” reveals the heart of who God is.

Chesed, steadfast love, is not mainly a passing feeling. Chesed is commitment in action. The coupon and promise picture makes the point plain: a coupon expires, but a promise does not. God’s steadfast love has no expiration date.

Sin is still serious, and Exodus does not minimize the damage that can echo into the third and fourth generation. God’s steadfast love, however, stretches for thousands, beyond the reach of sin’s ugly pattern. John 1 shows that this same glory comes in human form. Christ is the glory of God made visible, full of grace and truth. Steadfast love ate with humanity, bled on a cross, and gives forgiveness of sins and everlasting life. The proper response to such glory is worship, and Psalm 136 gives the refrain for every good thing, every hard thing, and every hoped-for thing: the steadfast love of the Lord endures forever.
