Consistency: The Key to Spiritual Growth
Summary
In our journey of faith, the importance of consistency cannot be overstated. Consistency is the bedrock upon which our spiritual growth and maturity are built. It is the repeated actions, the daily choices, and the steadfast commitment to our values that shape who we are in Christ. As we continue our series, "Decide Now, Better Choices, Better Life," we delve into the power of being consistent in our walk with God.
Consistency, by definition, means acting or doing something in the same way over time. It is about establishing habits that align with our values and beliefs. Successful people are those who do consistently what others do occasionally. This principle applies to our spiritual lives as well. We are not defined by what we do sporadically but by what we do consistently. James 1:12 reminds us that those who remain steadfast under trial will receive the crown of life promised by God.
The life of Daniel serves as a profound example of consistency. Despite being taken into exile and facing immense pressure to conform, Daniel remained steadfast in his faith. He was consistent in his speech, actions, and prayer life. Daniel's unwavering commitment to God made him trustworthy and set him apart in a foreign land. His consistency in prayer, even when it was outlawed, demonstrated his deep trust in God. Daniel's faith was not built in the lion's den but in his consistent prayer life.
Consistency in our speech means speaking the truth in love, as Daniel did when interpreting the king's dreams. It means being trustworthy and not double-tongued. Consistency in our actions reflects our faith and serves as a testimony to others. We are called to be ambassadors for Christ, and our consistent actions can lead others to Him. Lastly, consistency in prayer strengthens our faith. Like Daniel, we must cultivate a habit of seeking God daily.
To become more consistent, we must decide now to commit to it. Understand the reasons behind our desire for consistency and prepare for setbacks. God does not demand perfection but perseverance. When we falter, we must get back on track and continue our journey. Consistency is a process, and with God's help, we can develop habits that reflect His love and grace in our lives.

Day 1: Consistency Shapes Our Identity in Christ
In our spiritual journey, consistency is the foundation that shapes our identity in Christ. It is not the sporadic acts of faith that define us, but the daily, consistent practices that align with our values and beliefs. Just as successful individuals achieve their goals through repeated actions, our spiritual growth is nurtured by consistent practices like prayer and Bible study. This consistency in our spiritual disciplines helps us to remain steadfast in our faith, even when faced with challenges. By committing to these practices, we allow God to mold us into the people He desires us to be. [01:02:36]
"Therefore, my beloved brothers, be steadfast, immovable, always abounding in the work of the Lord, knowing that in the Lord your labor is not in vain." (1 Corinthians 15:58, ESV)
Reflection: What daily spiritual practice can you commit to this week to strengthen your identity in Christ?
Day 2: Daniel's Consistent Faith as a Model
Daniel's life serves as a powerful example of the impact of consistent faith. Despite being in exile and facing immense pressure to conform, Daniel remained steadfast in his beliefs, actions, and prayer life. His unwavering commitment to God set him apart and made him trustworthy in a foreign land. Daniel's faith was not built in the lion's den but through his consistent devotion and prayer life. This example teaches us that true faith is cultivated through regular and consistent devotion to God, even in the face of adversity. [01:03:51]
"But Daniel resolved that he would not defile himself with the king's food, or with the wine that he drank. Therefore he asked the chief of the eunuchs to allow him not to defile himself." (Daniel 1:8, ESV)
Reflection: In what area of your life do you feel pressured to conform, and how can you remain steadfast like Daniel?
Day 3: Consistency in Speech and Action Builds Trust
Being consistent in our speech and actions is crucial for building trust and credibility. As ambassadors for Christ, our words and deeds should align with our faith, serving as a testimony to others. Consistency in speech means speaking the truth in love and being trustworthy, while consistency in actions reflects our faith and can lead others to Christ. By aligning our words and actions with our beliefs, we demonstrate the transformative power of faith in our lives and inspire others to seek God. [01:09:32]
"Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person." (Colossians 4:6, ESV)
Reflection: Is there a recent conversation where your words did not align with your faith? How can you address this inconsistency today?
Day 4: The Power of Consistent Prayer
Consistent prayer is a powerful tool that strengthens our faith and prepares us for life's challenges. Daniel's unwavering prayer life was the foundation of his trust in God, illustrating that faith is cultivated through regular communion with Him. By making prayer a consistent part of our daily routine, we deepen our relationship with God and gain the strength to face trials with confidence. Consistent prayer not only transforms our hearts but also aligns our will with God's purposes. [01:14:22]
"Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer." (Romans 12:12, ESV)
Reflection: How can you create a dedicated time for prayer each day to strengthen your relationship with God?
Day 5: Developing Consistency Through Perseverance
To cultivate consistency, we must make a conscious decision to commit to it, understand our motivations, and be prepared for setbacks. God calls us to perseverance, not perfection, and with His help, we can develop habits that reflect His love and grace in our lives. When we falter, it is important to get back on track and continue our journey. Consistency is a process, and by relying on God's strength, we can persevere and grow in our faith. [01:17:05]
"And let us not grow weary of doing good, for in due season we will reap, if we do not give up." (Galatians 6:9, ESV)
Reflection: What is one area where you struggle with consistency, and how can you rely on God's strength to persevere?
Quotes
We are what we repeatedly do. We are great at what we are consistent at. Let me explain. I might go to the gym. I don't, but let's say I might. I might lift a weight. I know it's pronounced weights, but I wouldn't lift multiple. I would only lift one of them. And going to the gym once and lifting weights once does not make me a bodybuilder. In fact, if I go to the gym once, once a month. I am not going to be a bodybuilder. I need to go often and regularly to become a bodybuilder. Only frequent consistency yields results. Only frequent consistency yields results. [01:02:02] (49 seconds)
Daniel was a Jewish boy who had been taken into exile by Babylon in 605 BC when Babylon had sacked the city of Jerusalem. This was common practice. They would go into a city, they would take all the young eligible men, and they would take them back to serve in their place. They would take them back to serve in the palace. They would take them back to serve their people. So Daniel was a young Jewish boy, probably around the age of 12, and he was taken to Babylon to serve. And what they would do is they would indoctrinate them. They would say, you're going to eat our food, you're going to drink our drinks, you're going to wear our clothes, you're going to worship our gods, and you're going to become like one of us. [01:03:08] (44 seconds)
Daniel was a wise man, and the king had a series of dreams. And no one in the kingdom could interpret the dreams, and somebody said, well, I know a guy named Daniel, and he is pretty wise. Daniel was consistent. And so they called on Daniel, and Daniel comes to interpret the dream for the king. We need to speak what God has called us to speak. To be consistent in the way we talk. Even if the results might harm us. Ephesians 4 .15 says this. Speak the truth in love. We need to speak God's word. We need to speak what the Lord is telling us, whether it's what people want to hear or not. [01:04:59] (45 seconds)
We need to decide today to talk the way Jesus would want us to talk. James 3 .10 says this, From the same mouth come blessing and cursing. My brothers, these things not ought to be so. And listen, there are hundreds of verses about taming the tongue and we're not going to be able to go into all of that. But today my question is, why does it matter if we are consistent in the way we talk? Being consistent. Being consistent in speech makes us trustworthy in life. Daniel was consistent, therefore he was trustworthy. Daniel was consistent in the way he talked, therefore he was trustworthy. [01:07:31] (41 seconds)
Daniel 6 .4 says this, Then the high officials and the satraps sought to find a ground for complaint against Daniel with regard to the kingdom, but they could find no ground for complaint or any fault because he was faithful and no error or fault was found in him. Consistent in action. Daniel had made a name for himself because he was consistent in his behavior. Imagine them trying to dig through Daniel's past. Like today, they're filing through all of Daniel's Facebook posts. Or they're filing through all of his likes on Instagram. Or what he watches on TikTok. Maybe they're looking at Daniel and they're trying to find out what memes he posts. But they could find no fault in Daniel. He was consistent in his actions. [01:08:39] (53 seconds)
We need to be careful of the things we post. Careful of the things we like on social media. Careful of the things we do so everyone can see. Don't give the enemy ammunition against you. You try to show Jesus in the workplace, and someone says, well, I'm not going to listen to you because you did this and this and this just a week ago. And yeah, it was probably something you shouldn't have done. But now your witness is harmed. Sharing our faith. This is why consistency in our actions is so important. So that we can share the faith properly. So that we can be a proper example of God. 2 Corinthians 5 .20 says this. We are ambassadors for Christ. God making his appeal through us. We implore you on behalf of Christ to be reconciled to God. [01:10:13] (54 seconds)
The men wanted Daniel to be punished. To be taken down from his position. And the only way they were going to get him was through his faith. Daniel 6 .5, then these men said, we shall not find any ground for, for complaint against this Daniel. Unless we find it in connection with the law of his God. the men knew that Daniel was consistent in his prayer life. That he went and he prayed in the same spot every single day and he prayed at the same time every single day. So they devised this clever plan and they go to the king and they say, oh king, you are great and you are wonderful and there is nobody like you in all the land. And they play to the king's ego and they say, king, you are the greatest of all time. You are the goat, king. [01:11:07] (42 seconds)
And the king said, I like it. Let's do it. I think it's a great idea. And so the men write up the law and the king signs it and now the law of the land is you cannot pray to anybody else. And Daniel, do you think that's going to stop him? No, of course not. That's not going to stop him. In fact, it's going to embolden him even more. Daniel chapter 6 verse 10 says this, when Daniel knew the document had been sent he went to his house where he had a window in his upper chamber opened toward Jerusalem. He didn't shut his windows. He didn't pray in private. And he got down on his knees three times a day and he prayed and he gave thanks to God. And listen to this. As he had done previously. As he had done previously. He was consistent in his prayer life. [01:12:15] (53 seconds)
Daniel prayed even though he knew he wasn't supposed to. And there is great power in consistent prayer and likewise praying and studying God's word. If you don't have consistent time to pray and read your Bible, it's easy to get off track and to forget or to stop doing it. Here's the deal. We are consistent at things that don't benefit us. Being consistent at those things are easy. I have no problem eating unhealthily on a regular basis. I mean, I could, right, we'll eat cake every day all the time, consistently eat cake. Is that easy? Yeah, is it good for us? No, of course not. Being consistent at easy things is easy but not good. And we need to be consistent at things that are hard. They make us better. [01:14:22] (55 seconds)
Consistent prayer strengthens our faith. Listen. Daniel didn't learn to trust God in the lion's den. He learned to trust God in the prayer closet. His faith wasn't built in the battle. His faith was built when he was on his knees. He had consistently sought after God three times a day, day after day, week after week, month after month. He had consistently sought God. So you ask yourself, why is it that some of us are so inconsistent with our relationship with God? And the answer is it's because Daniel prayed consistently where we pray occasionally. Daniel's consistency led to this statement in Daniel 6 .22. I think it's such a great statement. My God sent his angel and shut the lion's mouths. They have not harmed me because I have found, I was found blameless before him and also before you, oh king, I have done no harm. [01:17:05] (65 seconds)
