Conquering Giants: Embracing Faith for True Freedom
Devotional
Day 1: Trusting God's Promises Over Our Fears
The Israelites faced a critical moment when they were on the brink of entering the Promised Land. Despite having witnessed God's miraculous works, they were paralyzed by fear when they saw the giants inhabiting the land. This fear led them to yearn for the familiarity of Egypt, a place of bondage, rather than trusting in God's promise of victory. This narrative serves as a mirror for our own lives, challenging us to trust in God's promises to save us from all sins, not just the ones we consider minor. We are called to examine our faith and reliance on God's power to deliver us from the giants of unbelief, bitterness, and anger that seem insurmountable. [02:16]
Numbers 14:8-9 (ESV): "If the Lord delights in us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. Only do not rebel against the Lord. And do not fear the people of the land, for they are bread for us. Their protection is removed from them, and the Lord is with us; do not fear them."
Reflection: What is one fear that is holding you back from fully trusting in God's promises? How can you take a step today to confront this fear with faith?
Day 2: Salvation from Every Sin
Believing in Jesus is not solely about the hope of reaching heaven; it is about the assurance of being saved from every sin. The giants in our lives, such as unbelief, bitterness, and anger, can appear overwhelming, but Jesus promises victory over them all. This promise requires us to revisit and understand the covenant we have entered into with God. It is not about living a life of comfort but engaging in a spiritual battle where every giant must be defeated. We are called to a life of complete freedom, even if it means facing discomfort and challenges. [06:16]
Hebrews 10:14 (ESV): "For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified."
Reflection: Identify a sin in your life that feels like a giant. How can you actively trust Jesus to help you overcome it today?
Day 3: The Call to Complete Freedom
The temptation to settle for a comfortable life, where some sins are tolerated, is strong. However, God calls us to a life of complete freedom, even if it means facing discomfort and challenges. The Israelites' failure was rooted in their desire for comfort and fear of the giants. Similarly, we must guard against the seduction of comfort and the intimidation of our personal giants. The Holy Spirit empowers us to face these challenges with boldness. We must renew our commitment to the covenant, understanding that Jesus' name means He will save us from all our sins. [10:20]
Galatians 5:1 (ESV): "For freedom Christ has set us free; stand firm therefore, and do not submit again to a yoke of slavery."
Reflection: What is one area of your life where you are settling for comfort instead of pursuing complete freedom in Christ? What step can you take today to move towards that freedom?
Day 4: Empowered by the Holy Spirit
The Holy Spirit empowers us to face our giants with boldness. We must renew our commitment to the covenant, understanding that Jesus' name means He will save us from all our sins. This requires endurance, as highlighted in Hebrews, where the need for perseverance in faith is emphasized. Our faith must be personal and active, trusting Jesus to conquer every sin in our lives. This is the essence of our Christian journey, marked by a relentless pursuit of holiness and freedom from sin. [15:19]
2 Timothy 1:7 (ESV): "For God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control."
Reflection: How can you rely on the Holy Spirit's power to face a specific challenge in your life today? What practical step can you take to invite His guidance and strength?
Day 5: Endurance in the Christian Journey
Endurance is essential in our Christian journey. Our faith must be personal and active, trusting Jesus to conquer every sin in our lives. This is the essence of our Christian journey, marked by a relentless pursuit of holiness and freedom from sin. The Israelites' story reminds us of the importance of perseverance and the dangers of longing for the comfort of past bondage. We are called to press on, trusting in God's promises and relying on His strength to overcome every obstacle. [27:08]
James 1:12 (ESV): "Blessed is the man who remains steadfast under trial, for when he has stood the test he will receive the crown of life, which God has promised to those who love him."
Reflection: In what area of your life do you need to cultivate greater endurance? How can you remind yourself of God's promises to help you persevere through trials?
Sermon Summary
In Numbers 13 and 14, the Israelites faced a pivotal moment that revealed their lack of faith in God's promises. Despite witnessing God's mighty works, they were overwhelmed by fear when confronted with the giants in the Promised Land. This fear led them to long for the comfort of Egypt, a place of slavery, rather than trust in God's promise of victory. This narrative challenges us to examine our own lives and the promises God has given us through Jesus. The promise is not merely about reaching heaven but about being saved from all our sins. Believing in Jesus means trusting Him to save us from every sin, no matter how daunting it appears.
The giants in our lives—unbelief, bitterness, anger, lust—can seem insurmountable, much like the giants the Israelites faced. Yet, the contract we signed with Jesus is that He will save us from all these sins. This requires us to reread and understand the covenant we entered into with God. It's not about living a comfortable life but about engaging in a spiritual battle where every giant must be defeated. The temptation to settle for a life of partial freedom, where some sins are tolerated, is strong. However, God calls us to a life of complete freedom, even if it means facing discomfort and challenges.

Sermon Clips
In Numbers Chapter 13 and 14 is where the Israelites really um displease God so much so it says that um God loathed them God was so disgusted with them his people what made God so disgusted with his very own people it says there Numbers Chapter 13 they you know the story they sent the spies out to they left Egypt they come to the Wilderness but when the spies came back they were very afraid and verse 30 Caleb quiets the people and says we should by all means grow up go up and take possession but the men who had gone up with him said we are not able and they gave a bad report in verse 32 this is numbers 13:32 we saw the sons of anch and we became like grasshopper in our own sight so we were in their sight. [00:00:34]
What was the promise of God the promise of God was that go and live in the promised land fight the Giants and live in the promised land they said let's go back to Egypt even after they had experienced all the victories that God had given them all those years their response was still I will not fight all the Giants in the land let me go back to Egypt and I thought about that and I said Lord how is that applicable in my life how's that applicable in our lives when God what is the promise that God has given us what is a promise that God has told us because of Jesus it is this his name is Jesus because he will save you from all your sins. [00:03:00]
Believing in Jesus is not saying I believe you Jesus that you will take me to Heaven that's not that's not the agreement you're signing when you say I believe in Jesus if you and you may have been we have may have been taught that wrong but to believe in Jesus is to believe that Jesus will save us from all sins so let's review the contract that we signed you thought you were just going to come in to work for 8 hours and get paid a paycheck no no no you got to do some work you got to work in the field you got to clean the toilets you got to do that now you read the contract you find that out and you be like oh I don't think I want this job you didn't read the contract properly. [00:04:33]
The very first contract you sign with Jesus is this Jesus will save me from every single giant that's the contract at the very beginning but Lord I look like a grasshopper compared to that giant can't track still applies did you sign up for this journey Jesus will save me from all my sins every single giant that was the contract that was the promise that God said hey I will take you to a Promised Land you're leaving Egypt but the point of it is not so that you can just be free and hanging around no I'm going to take you to a promised land to land flowing with milk and honey. [00:06:10]
The temptation when faced with the Giants to go so far as to say let me appoint a general let me appoint a leader and there's a voice inside us inside of us that says that's too much let me live a life where I can go to heaven where I can come to a good church I can try to have a good marriage I can try to be a good person I try to live by the Golden Rule but I'm going to have to live enslaved to that giant cuz that giant is too difficult that's what these people did they were only two people out of 600,000 people who said no we read the contract we signed up to leave Egypt because God has promised us if he will go with us we don't have to worry about any Giant. [00:08:45]
I want to renew my eyes to reread the contract that every single giant must be killed and the options are let's live a comfortable life where I can enjoy a nice life but be slaves to some giant or I can live a life of freedom but it's not going to be comfortable it's going to be a life of war that is what these Israelites were facing I can live a life of comfort that's the life of Egypt lots of Comforts in my life it says in another passage he was talking about how they had figs and pomegranates and all kinds of things that's what that came to their mind when they thought about Egypt they thought about the great food that they could have all the comfortable life. [00:10:04]
The Holy Spirit God wants to fill us with the Holy Spirit and give us that Spirit of boldness against every sin one of the marks that of the truths that we believe that not every Church believes is that God wants to give us a baptism in the Holy Spirit he wants to fill us with the Holy Spirit but the it's not a holding to a doctrine that we're interested in the proof of it is that we are evidencing a life of being filled with the holy spirit being baptized into the death of Jesus being raised up just like Jesus was raised up by the power of the Holy Spirit us being raised up to a new kind of life that where we were ashamed to talk about Jesus we are bold to talk about Jesus. [00:15:22]
Whenever I come at a sword with my come to the giant with a sword you know what the giant says giant says okay okay I'll behave okay okay you're right you're right you're right no no no don't kill me I'll behave I'll be nice to you from now on I'll control myself I won't dominate you like I did last weekend where I let you have a pity party all weekend and you were completely depressed I'll behave just don't kill me that's what the Giants of s tell me the ones that I really get some kind of pleasure from and so I put my sword back in my sheet okay good glad you told me that glad you're going to behave but watch it and I watch him the giant for a few days and then I get cozy with a giant again and 3 weeks later he's running my life again. [00:17:38]
I must have a personal faith that Jesus can save me from all of my sins that's what I signed up for when I became a Christian am I saying anything new isn't that what we signed up for I have a personal faith in Jesus you who are parents aren't you teaching your children you must have faith in Jesus well Daddy and Mommy what does that mean let's explain it to them that Jesus can save us from every single one of my sins look at my life is what I will tell my children look at Daddy's life look at Mommy's life he's going to save me from all of my sins for 18 years watch Dear Son Of Mine watch dear daughter of mine watch as Jesus saves me from all my sins. [00:29:44]
Let us have faith dear brother brothers and sisters that's a big burden of my heart that we will not lose the hope that God will save me from every single sin we are in need of endurance may God help us. [00:31:57]
