God’s grace is sufficient because believers have already received His unmerited favor in salvation. Christ gives everything that is needed, and the church is called to live like people who truly have Him. The call to be connected goes beyond seeing each other on Sunday and Wednesday; brothers and sisters need time together, meals together, and real opportunities to know one another.
Luke 6:43-45 puts two kinds of fruit right in front of the church: good fruit and bad fruit. The good tree does not bear bad fruit, and the bad tree does not bear good fruit. The mouth reveals what is going on in the heart, not only through words but also through tone, facial expressions, body language, and attitude. The image presented before people ought to be as clear a picture of Jesus Christ as possible.
Good fruit comes out in positive, helpful, encouraging words. Those words build up people, help organize good work, encourage service, impart grace to those who hear, and promote love. Ephesians 4:29 gives the standard: no unwholesome words, but words that edify and give grace. Truth still needs to be spoken, but truth must be spoken in love. A hard truth can be delivered in a way that helps rather than harms.
Bad fruit comes out negative, critical, complaining, hurtful, discouraging, foul, and abusive. Hurtful joking does not become harmless just because somebody says, “I’m just teasing.” Those words can reveal what is really in the heart. Bad words divide husbands and wives, parents and children, neighbors, and churches. A person may disagree without being disagreeable, but bad fruit starts growing when disagreement becomes an attempt to tear something down.
The heart behind harmful speech often carries its own hurt. God’s people therefore need to persevere with one another and use gracious words to help build up those who are struggling. Sinful speech cannot be justified, no matter how right a person believes a point may be. The proper response is to look in the mirror, ask God to search the heart, remove the wickedness, and keep the devil from speaking through damaging words.
The choice remains plain: good fruit or bad fruit. The mouth speaks from the overflow of the heart. A church that chooses helpful, loving, grace-giving words can grow close, serve together, and bear much fruit for the kingdom of God.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Words reveal the heart’s condition. Luke’s picture is plain: the mouth does not merely create a momentary problem, it lets out what has been stored inside. Tone, body language, and facial expression can say just as much as the actual sentence. A believer who wants speech to change must let God deal honestly with the heart. [28:27]
- 2. Good words impart grace to hearers. Helpful and encouraging words do more than make people feel better. They strengthen service, build people up, and make room for love to grow in a church body. Ephesians 4:29 calls for words that actually give grace to those who hear them. [38:08]
- 3. Disagree without becoming disagreeable. Disagreement is not automatically bad fruit, because people can look at matters from different perspectives. The real issue is whether the tone, attitude, and chosen words seek to help or to destroy. Truth spoken in love can still be direct without becoming cruel. [54:17]
- 4. Hurtful speech cannot be justified. Critical, belittling, foul, and abusive words cannot be excused by claiming good intentions. Those words divide hearts and can divide churches. God calls His people to examine themselves rather than defend what is plainly producing bad fruit. [53:32]
- 5. God can purge destructive heart patterns. The right response to sinful speech is not despair or pretending it is no big deal. The psalmist’s prayer, “Search me,” gives the proper posture before God. Christ can change the thoughts, hurts, and attitudes that eventually come pouring out through the mouth.
