Discipleship begins with a clear, simple truth: a disciple is someone who follows Jesus, is being changed by Jesus, and helps others know Jesus. Five Stone’s pathway of connecting, growing, and going gives common language for that journey, but no one earns a discipleship badge and cruises. The church keeps growing, being formed more and more into the image of Christ, until Jesus comes back or calls His people home.
Paul’s words in Ephesians 2 show why connection has to come first. Sin leaves people without Christ, without hope, and without God in the world. Religion, church attendance, a Christian home, baptism, classes, and trying to be good cannot bring anybody near to God. The blood of Jesus alone brings those who were far away into relationship with God. The gospel is nonnegotiable because a disciple cannot follow Someone to whom that person has never been connected.
Christ changes the whole picture for those who receive Him by faith. The person who was without Christ is now in Christ. The person who had no hope now has hope. The person who was without God now has access to the Father through the Spirit. Jesus died in the sinner’s place, was buried, and rose victoriously on the third day, and faith rests fully in that finished work rather than personal effort.
Paul also says that those in Christ are no longer foreigners and strangers but fellow citizens and members of God’s household. Belonging matters because God did not create His people to walk alone. Jesus is the cornerstone, and every believer is being fitted together into a growing holy temple, a dwelling place for God by the Spirit. Every stone matters. Every part of the body matters. Nobody needs to be left out.
Connection to Christ therefore leads to connection with others. Attending church is not the same thing as belonging in God’s family. God’s household practices the one another’s: praying, caring, loving, serving, weeping, and rejoicing together. The discipleship journey calls each person to ask whether faith is truly in Jesus and whether somebody knows that person’s story and is walking alongside that person. The greatest joy is found in joining God’s work of making disciples who connect, grow, and go.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Connection to Jesus comes before discipleship. Discipleship cannot be reduced to classes, service, moral effort, or church involvement. A person cannot truly follow Jesus while remaining disconnected from Him. The gospel creates the relationship from which every act of obedience, growth, and service must flow. [45:30]
- 2. The gospel ends spiritual separation. Sin leaves every person without Christ, without hope, and without God. Christ’s blood brings the far-off near, not because human effort finally measures up, but because Calvary has accomplished what sinners could never accomplish. Faith receives Christ Himself, not merely information about Him. [53:46]
- 3. Belonging is more than attending church. A full building does not necessarily mean that people are connected to Jesus or rooted in God’s family. God calls His people out of isolation and into a household where their stories are known and their burdens are carried. Church becomes family when believers actually practice the one another’s. [60:15]
- 4. Christ is the cornerstone of the family. Jesus holds the whole building together, and every believer is being fitted into what God is making. No stone is unnecessary, no part of Christ’s body is insignificant, and no believer is meant to stand alone. The Spirit creates a bond deeper than mere shared preferences or background. [62:05]
- 5. Faith in Christ changes everything. Christianity is not inherited from parents, received through religious activity, or secured by trying harder. Jesus’ death, burial, and resurrection are the only ground of salvation. A life connected to Christ moves from religion into relationship, from hopelessness into hope, and from isolation into God’s family.
