Bible ReadingRomans 12:1-8 Therefore, I urge you, brothers and sisters, in view of God’s mercy, to offer your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God—this is your true and proper worship. Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will. For by the grace given me I say to every one of you: Do not think of yourself more highly than you ought, but rather think of yourself with sober judgment, in accordance with the faith God has distributed to each of you. For just as each of us has one body with many members, and these members do not all have the same function, so in Christ we, though many, form one body, and each member belongs to all the others. We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith; if it is serving, then serve; if it is teaching, then teach; if it is to encourage, then give encouragement; if it is giving, then give generously; if it is to lead, do it diligently; if it is to show mercy, do it cheerfully.

[42:23]1 Corinthians 12:12-27 Just as a body, though one, has many parts, but all its many parts form one body, so it is with Christ. For we were all baptized by one Spirit so as to form one body—whether Jews or Gentiles, slave or free—and we were all given the one Spirit to drink. Even so the body is not made up of one part but of many. Now if the foot should say, “Because I am not a hand, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. And if the ear should say, “Because I am not an eye, I do not belong to the body,” it would not for that reason stop being part of the body. If the whole body were an eye, where would the sense of hearing be? If the whole body were an ear, where would the sense of smell be? But in fact God has placed the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body. The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don’t need you!” And the head cannot say to the feet, “I don’t need you!” On the contrary, those parts of the body that seem to be weaker are indispensable, and the parts that we think are less honorable we treat with special honor. And the parts that are unpresentable are treated with special modesty, while our presentable parts need no special treatment. But God has put the body together, giving greater honor to the parts that lacked it, so that there should be no division in the body, but that its parts should have equal concern for each other. If one part suffers, every part suffers with it; if one part is honored, every part rejoices with it. Now you are the body of Christ, and each one of you is a part of it.
[01:03:15]Galatians 2:20 I have been crucified with Christ and I no longer live, but Christ lives in me. The life I now live in the body, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me.
[50:02]Observation questions- In Romans 12:1-2, what comes before the command to offer our bodies as living sacrifices? What does Paul say believers are to do instead of conforming to the world?
- What different functions and gifts are named in Romans 12:4-8? What does the list show about the way believers serve together? [51:22]
- According to Romans 12:5 and 1 Corinthians 12:12-27, what words and pictures describe the relationship between members of Christ’s body?
- What is the difference between a spiritual gift and a natural ability or learned skill? What examples help make that difference clear? [52:44]
Interpretation questions- Paul calls believers to serve “in view of God’s mercy.” How does beginning with God’s mercy keep service from becoming a way to earn God’s love or merely fill needed positions? [50:52]
- Ephesians 2:10 says that believers are God’s handiwork, created for good works prepared in advance. How can this truth give hope to a person who feels broken, unqualified, or held back by past failure? [42:55]
- Romans 12 says that each member belongs to all the others. What does this mean for a believer who pulls away from the church during a hard season? [54:46]
- Paul says, “If your gift is serving, then serve,” and gives similar instructions for other gifts. Why is knowing a gift not enough? What may happen to the rest of the body when a believer keeps that gift unused? [59:18]
Application questions- What is one area of your life that may be good in itself—such as comfort, work, screens, money, sports, or a relationship—but may be getting in the way of following God’s purposes? What might it look like to place that area before God as a living sacrifice? [48:54]
- Have you ever felt like a broken piece that God could not use because of sin, pain, failure, or a limitation? How does God’s redeeming work change the way you see that part of your story? [43:05]
- Where might God be asking you simply to take the next step, rather than giving you the whole plan at once? What is one faithful next step you could take this week? [44:26]
- Which needs of the church or people around you stir your heart most deeply? How might that burden point toward a place where God could use you? [01:09:11]
- Consider your SHAPE: spiritual gifts, heart, abilities, personality, and experiences. Which one of these areas do you most clearly see God using in your life right now? Is there a practical way you could use it to care for someone this week? [01:11:15]
- Is there a way you have been comparing your gifts, personality, or opportunities with someone else’s? What would it look like to thank God for the grace He has given you and use what He has placed in your hands? [59:21]
- Who in the body of Christ might need encouragement, practical help, prayer, or simple presence right now? How could you move toward that person instead of assuming someone else will take care of it? [55:42]
