Be Confident in Your Good Works

Matthew 5:16-19 calls God’s people to let their light shine so others can see good works and glorify the Father in heaven. Jesus does not tear down the law and the prophets, but fulfills them, and that fulfillment gives confidence to keep doing what God has called His people to do. Good works are not for drawing attention to self. Good works point somebody else toward joy, peace, faithfulness, and the right way.

The vision of moving forward rests on blessings that God has already fulfilled. Past generations prayed, marched, worked, and believed God for equal schools, better opportunities, better homes, and leadership positions. God answered those prayers. The change that comes after God fulfills a blessing is not always a change from something bad. The change can be the next step in taking advantage of what God has already given.

The call to move forward requires a clear purpose. Purpose gives faith somewhere to go, because faith trusts the destination God has set and trusts His guidance through every challenge along the way. Confidence does not come from holding onto old memories or making everything look like it looked before. Confidence comes from trusting God’s plan, trusting God’s vision, and believing that God is taking His people in a different direction.

The burdens of the past include failures, but the past successes can hold somebody back too. God calls His people to press forward free from both. The reward of faithfulness includes salvation, but it also includes joy and peace in the heart, needs supplied, and the gladness of knowing that somebody was helped along the way. The reward is not about self, but the heart is made glad when God’s people hear what God said and then see what God said come to pass.

Change is not always a setback. Change can be a stepping stone that refines the path and lines life up with God’s will. Challenges can make faith stronger, bring clarity and purpose, and give a testimony. God can use even the things somebody did not pray for to show something, teach something, and grow something.

Christ died on the cross, rose again, and lives in the hearts of His people today. That truth keeps the vision steady. God’s people must endure to the end, continue their good works, and be confident that God will grow their faith as they move forward.
