David refuses fear because the Lord is his light, salvation, and stronghold; dwelling in God's presence anchors the heart even when enemies surround. Confidence in God is not the absence of conflict but the refusal to let fear control the soul because God has proven himself faithful. Seek God's face and live from that confidence so peace can take root in the midst of trouble. [50:17]
Psalm 27 (ESV)
1 The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? The LORD is the stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?
2 When evildoers assail me to eat up my flesh, my adversaries and foes, it is they who stumble and fall.
3 Though an army encamp against me, my heart shall not fear; though war arise against me, yet I will be confident.
4 One thing have I asked of the LORD, that I will seek after: that I may dwell in the house of the LORD all the days of my life, to gaze upon the beauty of the LORD and to inquire in his temple.
5 For he will hide me in his shelter in the day of trouble; he will conceal me under the cover of his tent; he will lift me high upon a rock.
6 And now my head shall be lifted up above my enemies all around me; and I will offer in his tent sacrifices with shouts of joy; I will sing and make melody to the LORD.
7 Hear, O LORD, when I cry aloud; be gracious to me and answer me!
8 You have said, "Seek my face." My heart says to you, "Your face, LORD, do I seek."
9 Hide not your face from me. Turn not your servant away in anger; you have been my help. Cast me not off; forsake me not, O God of my salvation!
10 For my father and my mother have forsaken me, but the LORD will take me in.
11 Teach me your way, O LORD, and lead me on a level path because of my enemies.
12 Give me not up to the will of my adversaries; for false witnesses have risen against me, and they breathe out violence.
13 I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the LORD in the land of the living!
14 Wait for the LORD; be strong, and let your heart take courage; wait for the LORD!
Reflection: When a current worry or "enemy" presses on you, what is one concrete way you will seek God's presence this week (a place to go, a passage to read, a person to call, or a prayer to pray) to replace fear with confidence?
God is declared to be light, and in Jesus that light becomes tangible — it exposes what hides in the dark and gives life where there was only fear. You cannot manufacture darkness to overwhelm light; instead, turning to Jesus brings illumination that pushes back worry, shame, and confusion. Let the truth of Jesus' light shape how you respond when darkness feels near. [55:25]
John 8:12 (ESV)
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."
Reflection: Identify a recurring area where darkness (fear, shame, or anxiety) feels strongest for you; what specific step will you take in the next 48 hours to "turn on the light" there — a Scripture to read, a truth to declare, or a person to invite into that space?
The Lord's name is a strong tower where the righteous run and find safety; like David hiding in caves, believers can find real protection in God's presence. Peace found in God's stronghold is active and practical — it moves people toward the shelter of the Lord rather than toward silent avoidance or false peace. Choosing God's refuge means running to him and allowing his security to shape decisions and courage. [01:04:43]
Proverbs 18:10 (ESV)
The name of the LORD is a strong tower; the righteous man runs into it and is safe.
Reflection: When trouble approaches, where do you instinctively run? Name one habit you will practice this week to run into the Lord's strong tower instead of relying on your own coping strategies.
Christ offers a peace that is not merely the absence of trouble but a deep steadiness that coexists with trials; it calms hearts and removes the root of fear. Because Jesus has overcome the world, his peace allows believers to "take heart" and stand firm even amid tribulation. Let that promise reshape how you face hard news, conflict, or uncertainty. [01:07:53]
John 14:27 (ESV)
"Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give to you. Let not your hearts be troubled, neither let them be afraid."
Reflection: Think of a situation that currently troubles you; which short line from Jesus' promise of peace will you recite morning and night this week to steady your heart, and how will you remind yourself to do it when anxiety returns?
Philippians calls believers to bring anxious concerns to God with prayer, supplication, and thanksgiving so God's peace — a guarding presence — can watch over heart and mind. Practically speaking, naming worries, offering them to God, and pairing them with gratitude can interrupt cycles of fear and allow the Holy Spirit to anchor the soul. Make prayer your first response so God's peace can actively guard you in daily life. [01:11:15]
Philippians 4:6-7 (ESV)
6 Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Reflection: Write down one anxious thought you will bring to God in prayer today together with one line of thanksgiving to pair with it; when will you pray this brief pairing, and how will you use it again if anxiety returns?
In Advent we light the candle of peace and admit how much our souls long for it—both in our world and inside our minds and bodies. Peace is not a sensory-deprivation pod where we float away from reality; it is the presence of God with us in the middle of real life. Psalm 27 lets us overhear David declaring confidence in God and crying out in lament, sometimes in the very same breath. That honest rhythm shows us the path: seek God’s face, confess your fears, and anchor your heart in who God is. I drew out the surprising link that kept surfacing: confidence and peace belong together. Where true confidence grows, fear shrinks. The key is where we place that confidence.
David names God as light, salvation, and stronghold. Light dispels darkness—every time. You can buy a flashlight; you cannot buy a “flash-dark.” Salvation is deliverance—David knew it with Goliath, and he asks God to “do it again.” A stronghold is a refuge—David hid in caves and learned God’s protection firsthand. All of this finds its fullness in Jesus: He is the Light of the world, our Deliverer from sin, our unshakable Rock. He gives peace not as the world gives.
Peace is also communal and costly. I shared how, in South Africa before Mandela’s election, gentle friends chose visible, risky peacemaking over hiding. Scripture calls that rejecting “false peace”—the quiet that comes from ignoring elephants in the room. David didn’t avoid Goliath for the sake of politeness; love drew him into hard engagement for the good of others.
Practically, this peace shows up in the night watches. When anxiety woke me, I asked the Spirit for confidence in Jesus, and I felt the difference—briefly—before distraction returned. So I came back again. That is the way: seek His face, wait for the Lord, repeat. At the Table we remember the One who grew from manger to cross to conqueror, who overcame the world and now meets us with His peace.
but in the midst of all of these bad things in the midst of enemies and foes and armies we see david having these great statements of confidence david declaring that god is his light god is his salvation god is his stronghold and it's because of who god is that there isn't space for david to have fear david declareshis confidence in the lord and until i really started studying for this sermon i hadn't really thought about this link this connection between confidence and peace but i think confidence and peace go hand in hand confidence brings peace confidence doesn't leave any room for worry if we're confident in something we're not worried about it

``because our confidence can be misplaced we can be confident all we want that the world is flat but it just isn't true we can confidently vouch for someone else's character but it doesn't mean that they're not going tohave a moral failing so who and what we place our confidence in is important because humans will failhumans will fail our knowledge is limited and people are going to let us down but jesus won'tjesus is the one that is true jesus is the one who will not fail jesus is the one who is all powerful and who promises that there is nowhere we can go apart from his love

and david is telling us why he can be confident in god what his confidenceis in in his opening line david calls god light and while scripture does associate god with light it's interesting because this is the only time in the old testament where god is actually called light it doesn't say god is like light it says god is light which i think is so significant when we think about jesus being the light that came into the world right that god light that became human flesh and dwells among us light always casts out darkness we can be confident in that every time we turn a light on in a dark placelight wins

i don't know if any of you have a flashlight on your christmas list this year i'm guessing probably not but a flashlight is a tool that gets rid of darkness it shines light into darkness and the darkness leaves but here's what you can't go and buy on amazon you cannot buy a flash darkthink about it there isn't a tool that you can use that projects darkness into light there isn't some kind of reverse candle that you can light in the daytime and then all of a sudden the space around it becomes dark because in the world that god created light always wins

so there were points in david's life where he was literally hiding in caves he literally physically experienced the stronghold of god the stronghold ofthose caves as as protection as he was being pursued as his life was threatened and so this image of protection and refuge brought peace to him in the midst of new trouble and i think it's really fun that we see these three descriptions of god light salvation stronghold later become descriptions of jesus

so i had a night this week that i couldn't sleep and i woke up and just was anxious not for any particular reason but i was anxious and had kind of waves of anxiety washing over me and so i'm laying there thinking about all of how i was feeling and i couldn't sleep and i thoughtoh i'm going to be preaching a sermon that confidence displaces anxiety that confidence brings peace and so i started praying asking for the holy spirit to give me confidence and i started focusing on confidence and letting that be what i felt and all of a sudden it actually worked i felt confidence instead of anxiety

peace is something that jesus brings to our world and we can experience it through our faith and our trust in him and it doesn't mean that our lives are going to suddenly become free of enemies it doesn't mean that we aren't going to face things that cause us toworry that we're not going to get distracted but we can bring ourselves back to that promise that whatever we face whatever challenges we find ourselves in that jesus promises he will bring peace
