Matthew 9 shows Jesus going through cities and villages, teaching, preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing every sickness and disease. Jesus does not merely see a crowd. He sees souls. He sees people who are fainting, scattered abroad, and without a shepherd. His compassion flows from seeing their real condition and their greatest need, which is salvation.
The multitudes still exist in Cape Girardeau, in the parts of town people would rather avoid, and all around the world. The lost may have heard a distorted version of Jesus, or they may have never truly heard at all. Christ’s people are called not to argue with them, but to love them, witness to them, and show them who Jesus really is. Missions starts with a heart for souls, but that burden first comes from getting behind the things that move the heart of God.
Jesus calls His disciples to pray for the Lord of the harvest to send forth laborers. God uses willing servants. He uses manpower, money power, and hearts that are surrendered to His will. Isaiah’s “Here am I, send me” comes before a full explanation of where he will go or what he will face. God does not first need what a person has. God wants the heart. Giving, serving, going, and witnessing without a surrendered heart are in vain.
Romans 12 calls believers to present their bodies as living sacrifices, and Proverbs 3 calls them to trust the Lord with all their hearts. God does not want a piece, the leftovers, or only what somebody feels comfortable giving. He deserves it all because He is worthy of praise, service, worship, giving, and going. Some are called to foreign fields, while others faithfully serve and support the work through the local church.
Acts 1:8 keeps the church from choosing between local work and worldwide missions. Jerusalem, Judea, Samaria, and the uttermost part of the earth belong together. Lighthouse Baptist Church can knock doors, pass out Bibles, run bus routes, and witness in Cape while helping missionaries carry that same gospel into places the church may never see. Acts 13 shows that missionaries are sent from a praying, fasting, serving local church and return to report what God has done.
God also uses sacrificial giving. The Philippian church could not travel everywhere Paul went, but their support made them partakers in the fruit. God owns everything, supplies what His churches need, and calls His people away from entitlement and into gratitude. The question is not merely, “Lord, what can I give?” It is, “Lord, how do You want to use me?”

Key Takeaways
- 1. Jesus sees souls, not just crowds. Christ looked past the visible multitude and saw people fainting and scattered without a shepherd. A burden for missions begins when people cease being interruptions, strangers, or statistics and become eternal souls. Love does not need to compromise truth, but it must keep truth from becoming cold and argumentative. [28:33]
- 2. God wants the heart before the gift. Service, money, ministry, and sacrifice mean little when the heart remains withheld from God. Isaiah could say, “Here am I, send me,” because availability came before details. Surrender does not demand to know the whole road before obeying the One who directs it. [33:42]
- 3. Jerusalem and the uttermost belong together. Acts 1:8 does not permit a choice between reaching the local city and supporting the world. A church can witness in Cape Girardeau while helping carry the gospel into nations its members may never visit. Local faithfulness and worldwide missions are not competing burdens. [40:05]
- 4. Giving shares in gospel fruit. The Philippians could not go everywhere Paul went, yet their giving joined them to the work God did through him. Sacrificial support is not merely sending money away; it is taking part in the eternal fruit produced through that labor. God’s provision frees His people to give thankfully rather than live entitled.
