Acts 4:23-3123 “When they were released, they went to their friends and reported what the chief priests and the elders had said to them.”
[06:19]24 “And when they heard it, they lifted their voices together to God and said, ‘Sovereign Lord, who made the heaven and the earth and the sea and everything in them,”
[17:03]25 “who through the mouth of our father David, your servant, said by the Holy Spirit,
‘Why did the Gentiles rage,
and the peoples plot in vain?
26 The kings of the earth set themselves,
and the rulers were gathered together,
against the Lord and against his Anointed’—
27 for truly in this city there were gathered together against your holy servant Jesus, whom you anointed, both Herod and Pontius Pilate, along with the Gentiles and the peoples of Israel,
28 to do whatever your hand and your plan had predestined to take place.
29 And now, Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness,
30 while you stretch out your hand to heal, and signs and wonders are performed through the name of your holy servant Jesus.’
31 And when they had prayed, the place in which they were gathered together was shaken, and they were all filled with the Holy Spirit and continued to speak the word of God with boldness.”
[30:36]Psalm 2:1-21 “Why do the nations rage and the peoples plot in vain? The kings of the earth set themselves,”
[17:16]2 “and the rulers take counsel together, against the LORD and against his Anointed, saying,”
[23:37]Psalm 23:1-41 “The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.”
[26:47]2 “He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters.”
3 “He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake.”
4 “Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me.”
[27:52]Observation questions
- After Peter and John are released and report the threats, what does the church do first, and who do they go to? [06:19]
- What names, actions, and qualities of God fill most of the church’s prayer before they mention the threats?
- What do the believers ask God to do in verses 29-30, and what do they not ask Him to do?
- In Psalm 23, what changes in David’s words when he moves from describing the Shepherd as “he” to speaking directly to God as “you”? [27:52]
Interpretation questions
- Why might the church’s first move toward “their own” and toward prayer matter when believers face pressure, fear, or uncertainty? [13:42]
- Acts 4 says that Herod, Pilate, the Gentiles, and Israel acted against Jesus, yet they did what God’s hand and plan had predestined. How does this show both the reality of human wrongdoing and the sovereignty of God?
- Why does remembering God as Creator, Speaker, and Sovereign King change the kind of requests believers bring to Him? [18:26]
- The church asks for boldness to continue the very work that brought opposition. What might faithful boldness look like for a believer without becoming harsh, reckless, or combative? [20:24]
Application questions
- When pressure hits—a difficult conversation, bad news, financial stress, conflict at home, or uncertainty about the future—what is usually the first reflex? What would it look like to make turning to God the first response rather than the last resort? [07:36]
- Is there a burden currently being carried alone that could be shared with trusted believers for prayer? What makes it difficult to go to “your own” instead of relying only on yourself? [14:28]
- The church begins by making much of God before making much of the threat. What specific truth about God is needed most this week, and how could that truth shape a prayer? [19:19]
- Fear often writes worst-case scenarios before prayer even begins. What fear-filled thought has been taking up space in the mind lately? Which words from Psalm 2, Psalm 23, or Acts 4 could replace that script? [24:21]
- Is there a situation where the main prayer has been, “God, get me out of this”? How might that prayer also become, “God, keep me faithful and make me bold where I am”? [21:28]
- God’s presence is not a promise that every hard circumstance will immediately change. Where is there a need to ask God for the strength, joy, and reminder of His presence in the middle of something that remains hard? #!!31:32!!
