Proverbs 16:3 gives the whole thing in one clear promise: “Commit to the Lord whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.” The verse does not invite somebody to hustle harder, force doors open, or try to get the right people to notice them. The verse calls for everything to be handed over to God first.

The contrast between striving and surrender shows up in the way closed doors can feel disappointing but still be merciful. God sometimes closes a door because the desire behind it is more about personal initiative than his direction. God knows how badly human plans can get messed up when they are left in human hands, so a closed door can become a reason to say, “Thank you, Lord. You know better than I do.”

The work may not change right away, but the heart can change because Christ is the true one being served.

Psalm 37 and Proverbs 3 say the same thing from another angle: trust the Lord, acknowledge him, and let him direct the path. God orders the steps of his people and holds them by the hand. The image is not of somebody figuring life out in their own strength, but of the God of all creation reaching down in weakness, trial, and uncertainty to guide them.

Joseph gives a picture of this kind of faithfulness. God did not remove every hard circumstance from Joseph, but God was with him in every place. Joseph did not need to scheme, plot revenge, or promote himself. The Lord gave favor, formed character, and raised him up in God’s time.

The call to commit everything to the Lord does not mean passively waiting around. The call means faithfully serving in the mundane, the boring, and the hard places while God does his work. God’s open doors bring a green light, but God’s will must come before personal plans.
