The Coming Feast

Matthew’s picture of the wedding feast keeps the context right in front of the religious leaders. Jesus is still standing in the temple, speaking to the chief priests and elders who questioned His authority while the King Himself told them about His kingdom. The king in the story is God, the Son is Jesus, and the wedding feast is the great joy of being brought into the kingdom of God.

The invitation had already gone out. Israel had been set apart, the prophets had called, John the Baptist had preached, and Jesus had shown them the power of God right in front of their eyes. Yet the invited guests went from “I’ll go” to “don’t bother me.” Farms, businesses, and the cares of life became more important than the King’s invitation. The problem was not that they had no invitation. The problem was that they would not come.

The king’s patience shows the heart of God. God continued to send servants, continued to call, and continued to say, “I still love you and I still want you to come.” But the king’s judgment also shows that patience is not permission to refuse God forever. Jesus warned those leaders that they were about to reject and kill the Son, and that a day of judgment was coming.

The highways and byways show that the kingdom is not filled with people because they are awesome or because God is lucky to have them. God gathers “everybody,” both evil and good, so that lives might show that only God can do this. The invitation must go out broadly, because nobody enters the feast by deserving a seat at the table.

The man without wedding clothes shows that being near the feast is not the same as being ready for the feast. The king provided the clothes, yet the man chose to come his own way. Christ alone is the way, the truth, and the life, and His righteousness alone covers sin and shame. People are called to repentance, discipleship, and devotion, not just a party.

The feast is ready, the food is prepared, and the table is set. The question is whether a person will keep making excuses, keep trying to establish personal righteousness, or turn from sin and trust what Jesus did through His life, cross, and victory.
