Day 1: When Exile Feels Endless, God Says “Comfort”

The Israelites endured seventy years of displacement, their hope worn thin like threadbare cloth. Yet God’s first word to them wasn’t rebuke or instruction, but a doubled command: “Comfort, comfort my people.” This divine tenderness meets us in seasons that feel like unending exile—grief, unanswered prayers, or consequences of past choices. God’s covenant love refuses to let darkness have the final word. His comfort isn’t shallow reassurance, but the promise that warfare will end and sins are pardoned. Even now, He speaks tenderly to those who feel forgotten. [09:45]

“Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and proclaim to her that her hard service has been completed, that her sin has been paid for, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins.” (Isaiah 40:1-2, NIV)

Day 2: Valleys Lifted, Mountains Made Low

God’s arrival reshapes landscapes. Valleys—places of shame or despair—are raised up. Mountains—obstacles like pride, addiction, or systemic injustice—are humbled. The image of a highway in the desert reveals God’s determination to remove every barrier between Himself and His people. This isn’t self-help optimism; it’s divine intervention. The same God who leveled terrain for exiled Israelites now works to make crooked places straight in our hearts, relationships, and communities. Preparation begins with surrendering what blocks His way. [10:50]

Day 3: Grass Withers, But God’s Word Stands

We cling to fading comforts: achievements, savings accounts, or others’ approval. Isaiah compares these to grass and flowers—vibrant today, gone tomorrow. Yet God’s promises outlast every crisis. His Word isn’t a motivational quote but a covenant anchored in His character. When the missionary couple faced bankruptcy, they chose trust over panic. Their story mirrors the Israelites’ exile: God’s provision arrived not early, but exactly when needed. His Word remains the only anchor when life feels temporary. [15:22]

Day 4: From the Pit to Proclaiming

God doesn’t comfort us to make us comfortable, but to commission us. The call to “go up on a high mountain” (Isaiah 40:9) came to exiles still in Babylon—people mid-struggle, not post-victory. Like the pastor who shared his grief journey, our pain becomes a megaphone for God’s faithfulness. Proclaiming isn’t preaching perfection, but testifying how God carried us through the valley. Even in uncertainty, we declare: “Behold your God”—the Shepherd who gathers the broken close. [21:17]

Yet God sent provision through Japanese strangers and PCC members, His modern-day ravens. Exile seasons train us to receive grace without earning it. Comfort here isn’t quick escape, but the assurance that even in the pit, God is writing a story of redemption. Our job isn’t to claw our way out, but to wait, fed by His unexpected mercies. [33:41]

Sermon Summary

Isaiah 40 opens after the hard word of judgment in Isaiah 39. Israel has been told that Babylon will carry everything away, and then suddenly God says, “Comfort, comfort my people.” The gap between chapters is the seventy years of exile, years of darkness, persecution, uncertainty, and longing for home. Exile can feel like grief nobody understands, unanswered prayer, regret over past choices, a barren desert, or the bottom of a pit.

God’s first word to His people in their darkest season is comfort. “My people” and “your God” carry covenant language. God has not forgotten His people. Their warfare will end, their iniquity will be pardoned, and salvation will come even when the road ahead looks impossible.

The voice in the wilderness announces that the Lord is coming. Valleys are lifted, mountains are made low, rough places become plain, and every obstacle is removed for the King’s arrival. God does not leave His people wandering forever. Yahweh is not like angry gods who leave people fighting their way home. God is merciful, kind, loving, and faithful to lead His people home. Yet the highway of the Lord calls for preparation: sin must be confessed, idols that provide false comfort must be put away, and God’s commands must be obeyed.

The grass withers and the flower fades, but the word of God stands forever. Earthly comfort, money, plans, security, and human strength are like grass. They cannot carry the weight of a dark season. God’s promises remain solid and sure, even when circumstances make no sense. The missionary couple’s unexpected tickets to the United Kingdom show that God’s word does not return empty. God can provide “today,” even when there appears to be no money, no plan, and no visible way forward.

Zion is then called to go up a high mountain and proclaim, “Behold your God.” Israel receives comfort not merely to survive exile, but to declare God’s comfort while still in the middle of it. Christ has already made the highway to God through His cross, tearing apart the curtain that separated sinners from God. The mighty King also tends His flock like a shepherd, gathers lambs in His arms, and gently leads those who are weak.

God can use the bottom of the pit for a purpose. Grief must be grieved properly, surrendered to God, and repurposed into comfort for others. God faithfully provides even for wounded soldiers hiding in a dark cave. When His time is right, God lifts His people up so that their wounds become testimony: “Behold, your God.”
