Paul’s words in Romans 13 announce a new day: “The night is almost gone. The day of salvation will soon be here.” The gospel has always carried that dawn-shaped hope. Isaiah saw a great light coming. Zechariah announced that morning light from heaven was about to break. John declared that the light shines in the darkness and the darkness cannot extinguish it. Jesus rose, and morning broke into the world.
Romans 13 calls God’s beloved children to live like morning has come, even while the world still looks dark. Paul’s question reaches beyond government, taxes, and responsibility: How do people who belong to Jesus live in the world as it actually is? The answer begins with an obligation that never gets paid off: love. Houses, cars, and loans may eventually be paid down, but love remains due every day. Someone may be difficult, disappointing, or in deep disagreement, yet Christ’s love calls His people to love anyway.
Love fulfills God’s law because real love makes holiness visible. Biblical love seeks another person’s good. Love comforts, forgives, tells the truth, creates boundaries, and refuses to ask, “What can I get away with?” Love asks, “What does Christ look like here?” Holiness shows up at work through integrity, hard work, and truthful living. Holiness shows up at home when love is the first thing on the lips, before the frustrations of the day take over.
Paul’s command to wake up is not God’s angry demand for people to get it together. Morning is coming, and the Holy Spirit is still forming people into the likeness of Jesus. Christian hope is not a countdown clock or fear about the end times. Jesus Christ has come, Jesus Christ has risen, Jesus Christ is Lord, and Jesus Christ will make all things new. The resurrection is the first light of morning, and the church need not live as though the news, politics, fear, or unpaid bills get the last word.
Paul then calls believers to take off dark deeds like dirty clothes and put on the shining armor of right living. Jealousy and quarreling belong on the same list as the sins often treated as worse, because anything that destroys love, controls the heart, damages another person, or pulls a life away from Christ belongs to the night. Grace does not say, “Clean yourself up so Jesus will want you.” God looks at His people and calls them beloved. Morning has come, so God’s beloved must dress for the day by clothing themselves with the presence of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Love remains the unpaid Christian debt Paul frames love as an obligation that never reaches a final payment. Love does not depend on whether another person has been easy, fair, or agreeable. Christ’s love at work within a believer keeps calling for another faithful response, another act of mercy, another refusal to return hurt for hurt. [52:41]
- 2. Love makes holiness visible in ordinary life Holiness is not shrunk into a list of private rules or religious appearances. Love gives holiness hands and feet at work, at home, in conflict, and in the small moments when nobody is watching. Christ becomes visible when integrity, truth, welcome, and care shape the first response. [55:44]
- 3. Morning has come through Christ’s resurrection Christian hope does not deny war, grief, injustice, fear, or exhausting burdens. Jesus’ resurrection declares that darkness is real but never final. The church can face a broken world without acting as though the latest headline has more authority than the risen Christ. [61:56]
- 4. Grace calls beloved people into holiness God does not wait for cleaned-up people before calling them beloved. Grace gives new life in Jesus Christ, and that new life becomes the reason to pursue holiness. The call is not to earn acceptance, but to stop settling for night clothes when the day has already begun. [67:53]
- 5. Put on the presence of Jesus Paul’s answer is not simply trying harder. Jesus must shape speech, desires, reactions, private choices, and responses toward frustrating people. A life surrendered to Christ, filled with the Holy Spirit, increasingly reflects the character and love of Jesus.
