People, we have a problem. We are totally depraved. And without God, we are lost. Do we need any more proof? Yes, the devil prowls around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. We hear this in scripture. Yet, there is no denying that evil and total depravity hold hands in a wicked marriage. Now, look at what I saw after I took this picture. I hope the guy didn't think it was creepy today. You got to wonder if he should be doing that, right? This was the back of the truck. What do you see? What do you see? I saw the cross first as I followed. It was only later as I passed the truck that I was aware of the demons and depravity. And now I'm thinking it doesn't matter if you recognize at first which one, the demons or the depravity or the cross. We need Jesus. [00:30:46]
What we need most and foremost on this journey. Remember what I did in the confession time today. I said, what's, we're control freaks. What's the biggest lie that we tell ourselves? That we're in control. Did we in our own strength confide? Our striving would be losing. We're not the right man on our side. The man of God's own choosing. You ask who that may be. Lord, Sabbath is name. Jesus Christ, it is he. From age to age the same. And he must win the battle. [00:33:25]
So how can one stand? How can one fearlessly make known the mystery of the gospel? One must put on the armor of God, and this is a deeper discipleship journey. This is what's at the heart of it, of what it means to be a disciple, to learn and to grow, and all of these ways of following. [00:36:43]
Now, it's nothing we do of ourselves. A breastplate of righteousness, well, whose righteousness? Christ's. Spirit in our lives. As I go through these, you are going to see that it is not anything of our own. It's a great language to put on. What he is saying is these things you have and you are in Christ. Put them on. Clothe yourselves daily with these things in the new life in Christ and put off the old. [00:40:03]
A breastplate of righteousness protects the heart. You know, a significant blow that would pierce the heart can and usually is deadly. The heart pumps blood to the rest of the body. It's super central. We need a breastplate of righteousness to cover our heart, so to speak. And we need it to be a good fit. And the fit is the righteousness of Jesus. To have a heart that is honed to the spirit of Jesus. [00:41:28]
How about a helmet of salvation? This one's good because today the mind, the devil loves to get in there. He likes to take a part of God's truth and twist it. He loves to tell half -truths, which means they're half -lies. The battle for the mind today is unbelievable and it's strong. It's happening on campus and universities. It's happening in schools. It's happening in churches. It's happening in all kinds of places of social media where your mind is being shaped. Paul says, put on a helmet of salvation, the salvation of Jesus, that we might think like Christ, that our minds might be renewed and transformed to that of Christ. [00:42:09]
He wants a fully devoted heart. He wants all of us. Listen to 2 Corinthians, which we just went through. We are to demolish arguments and every pretension that sets itself up against the knowledge of God God and take captive every thought to make it obedient to Christ. Okay. So that our synapses are in sync with Jesus. Whatever is true, whatever is noble, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is trustworthy, whatever is good, We live in a pervasively humanistic world right now. Incredibly hedonistic. I think we're a little numb to it. [00:43:48]
Do we have faith that God can feed a multitude? Do we have faith like Abraham that God will provide? Do we have faith that in a storm we need not fear? Do we have faith? Do we have faith that is belief like a shield that is faithfulness in action? Jesus' word and spirit working together, our beliefs in harmony with Jesus, in tune with God's word. [00:46:40]
A belt of truth, like a sash around the waist. I like this. Holding your pants up, so to speak. God's truth, the truth that is Jesus, so we don't get caught with our pants down or our pants falling down. We all need the belt of truth. That is Jesus. That is salvation in his name. That is faith alone, by grace alone, in Christ alone, standing on the word of God alone, that my life is nothing but for the glory of God alone. Amen? [00:47:23]
Today, the devil loves to tell us lies, what's going to make you happy, where you can find true fulfillment of desire. It'll take a piece of God's truth and twist it, tell nothing but a half -truth everywhere he goes, and his minions' mouthpieces are everywhere. Can you discern them? From the demons to the totally depraved. And since the devil likes to hit us below the belt, it'd be good to put on the belt of truth. [00:48:03]
And then the sword of the spirit, which is the word of God. I love how word and spirit are interchangeable here. To be in tune and in step with the spirit, filled with the spirit, is to embody the word of God. I mean, this is Psalm 1, why I love it so much. It's like, meditate on God's word day and night. The one who does this is like a tree planted by streams of living water, yields its fruit and season, leaves don't wither, whatever it does, prospers, but not so the wicked. God's word and spirit, interchangeable. [00:48:37]
That's the beautiful thing about Jesus, that in faith and faithfulness, the word of God is like an offensive weapon and a defensive weapon. It depends what the circumstance calls for. But we must take up the sword of the spirit. [00:50:13]
If I said to you, you're no good, how would the word of God help you? I pray, Paul says, that you being rooted and established in love may have the power together with all of the Lord's holy people to grasp how wide and long and high and deep is the love of Christ and to know this love that surpasses knowledge that you may be filled to the measure of all the fullness of God. You're no good. No, actually, I am the object by name of God's love. [00:50:39]
If you're angry and tempted to strike out, how could the word of God help you? Forgive, as the Lord has forgiven you. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him, the other also. Return evil with good. Since God loved us first, we ought to love one another. [00:51:33]
Are you discouraged, feeling defeated? What about fear? We tackled this one recently. We tackled it, but I doubt any of us have pinned it to the ground, right? The Lord is my light and my salvation. Whom shall I fear? Of whom shall I be afraid? The love of God, a perfect and total love, drives out fear. [00:52:58]
Do you feel like your sin has put distance between you and God? I'll tell you what, just read the parable of the prodigal son. Are you a prodigal daughter? Put yourself in there. Return to me with all your heart. Rend your heart. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and compassionate, slow to anger and abounding in love. [00:54:08]
How about worry, anxiety and the like? Don't be anxious about anything. Bring everything with prayer and petition, with thanksgiving to God, and the peace of God, and the God of peace. I love that. Both God, peace of God, and the God of peace will be with you. Philippians, I believe. [00:54:46]
Are you lacking purpose and meaning in your life? Are you thinking, what the world am I here for? Well, do you know that you're the salt of the earth? You're the light of the world? You're God's like witness, witness on earth to his great love? [00:55:17]
When it comes to the gospel of Jesus Christ and God's calling on our life, we need feet fitted with the readiness that comes from the gospel of peace, it says. And what this means is that we have the gospel of what it means, peace with God, that we can communicate with someone else, that we actually know it in the depth of our heart so that it flows from us. We can speak about it in season, out of season, whatever the circumstance may be. Shoes that are made for running the race that God marked out for us. [00:57:14]
So a breastplate of righteousness, the heart, the helmet of salvation, the mind, the shield of faith, belief and conviction, both faith and faithfulness, sword of the spirit, which is the word. Read it, study it, memorize, meditate it, take it in, live it out. Feet fitted with the readiness of the gospel. [00:58:10]
We want to be ready with the gospel of Jesus Christ in our lives at any moment, at any time. We want to live it every day. [00:59:26]
And though this world with devils filled should threaten to undo us, we will not fear, for God hath willed his truth to triumph through us. The prince of darkness grim, we tremble not for him. His rage we can endure, because his doom is sure. That word above all earthly powers, no thanks to them abideth. The spirit and the gifts are ours to him who with us sideth. Let goods and kindreds go, this mortal life also, the body they may kill, God's truth abideth still. A mighty fortress is our God, a bulwark never failing, our helper amid the flood, of mortal ills prevailing. His kingdom is forever. [00:59:46]
