#RelationshipNotReligion
“``This is very different than the religion that the pharisees were practicing because religion says, do this and do that. That's what religion is based on. Are you doing that thing? Are you doing this thing? You better be doing this and you better be doing that. Your value and your identity is based on the things that you do, so you better be sure to do them. If you think about it, that's all religion is at the end of the day, is a lot of do, do. But a relationship with Jesus is not that at all. A relationship with Jesus says it is done.”

#ChooseGreaterNotGood
“What is the good thing that is keeping you from God's greater thing? Is it possible that in our desire to seek what is good for ourselves right now and for our future, what is good for our kids right now and their future? Is it possible in the seeking of the good things that we have neglected the greater thing that God has called us to do? And that is to know, love, and follow Jesus Christ.”

#RitualsVsRelationship
“Now don't miss this because this is the heart of the pharisee. They were not upset because they thought the disciples were sinning. They didn't say, Jesus, why are your disciples sinning? They were upset because they thought the disciples weren't following tradition. They weren't following the rules. They weren't doing what they thought they should be doing. And this is what happens when you place rituals over a relationship with God. This is what happens when you place tradition over truth. In other words, looking spiritual is not the same as loving Jesus.”

#GoodCanBeIdolatry
“And here's the thing. It doesn't have to be a bad thing to be idolatry. It doesn't. A lot of people think when they think the word idolatry, they're like, oh, that's that evil, bad stuff that you could do that God doesn't like. Maybe it also could be really good things that you have placed in front of what God ultimately called you to do. Really good things for you and your career. Really good things for your kids and their future. Really good things that you've put as a priority over God's greater thing, which is for you and your children and their children and their children's children to know, love, and follow Jesus Christ as the greatest thing.”

#HeartNotBehavior
“Do you see how dangerous that is? Do you really wanna serve a God that loves you based on how good or bad you behave? Really? Some of you grew up with parents like that, and that was horrible. Do you wanna serve a god that does that? Jesus' message to us today is if if if that's you, if you've been focusing on behavior, you're fighting the wrong battle. Your greatest problem is not your behavior. Your greatest problem is your heart. That's that's the truth. That's what Jesus is saying. Your greatest problem is your heart.”

#HeartIsCoreTruth
“I am convinced that so many people believe that their greatest problem is their behavior. It's not. I'm not saying it's not a problem, that it can't be a problem. I'm saying it's not your greatest problem. Your greatest problem is your heart because what's in your heart is always gonna find a way to come out. And the bad news is we can't give ourself a new heart. We can't scrub our heart clean enough. We can't discipline our heart into purity. We can't attend church enough or read our bible enough or pray enough or give enough or try hard enough for our hearts to be clean and made alive. We can't do that on our own because dead hearts can't revive themselves. That's why Jesus came,”

#HeartSourceOfIdentity
“So our hearts are not just a a a a machine that happens to pump blood to our body, It is the source of who we are becoming. Every decision, desire, attitude, action eventually flows from our heart. So if our hearts are healthy, I don't just mean physically, right, emotionally, spiritually, then our lives will lead into a healthy pattern. Why? Because what's inside is gonna find its way out. If our hearts are unhealthy, similarly, our lives will lead in an unhealthy fashion. Why? Because what's inside is going to find its way out. Jesus is showing us that we are not born with a behavior problem. We're born with a heart problem. There's something wrong with every one of our hearts, and better habits can't fix it. Better behaviors can't fix it. More rules, trying harder, can't fix it. We need a new heart. We need a heart transplant.”

#RulesChangeBehaviorNotHeart
“The second thing that I see from this passage is this, rules can change your behavior, but they can't change your heart. Man, this is like pharisee one zero one here. Jesus shocks the pharisees and he's like, you guys have been fighting the wrong battle this whole time. You're you're trying to change your inside by focusing on your outside. And he's like, that's not the way this equation works. That's not the way the math, maths. You can't change it that way. They believe that the problem was outside of people. Jesus says, no. The problem has always been and will always be inside people.”
