There is so much power in the name of Jesus, but that power is not just in the words we speak—it’s in the way we live. To truly “speak Jesus” is to let our actions, our compassion, our generosity, and our radical love reflect Him in every corner of our lives. As we look to take ground for the kingdom of God in our city, it’s not enough to simply declare His name; we must embody His character, making space for people, valuing them, and helping them without condition.
Our church’s mission is to help people find the Father, a family, and a fulfilling future, and our vision is for people to experience how Jesus changes everything. This is not a daydream—it’s a vision that demands sacrifice. Just as my daughter’s willingness to invest her own resources showed her commitment to her vision, so too must we be willing to pour ourselves out for the vision God has given us. The city of Akron needs a church like Cornerstone, not because we are better than others, but because we uniquely reach people who might otherwise fall through the cracks—those deconstructing their faith, those hurt by church, the marginalized, and those who need a “long landing strip” to process their questions and pain.
But to fulfill this calling, we must see our city as God sees it—not as a problem to solve, but as a people to love. Jesus looked at the crowds and had compassion, seeing their confusion and helplessness. We are called to do the same, to fight for our city, our neighborhoods, and our families, not to run from the challenges but to engage them with love and perseverance. The fight for the soul of our city is worth it, just as someone once decided we were worth fighting for.
We will face opposition and criticism, but if God’s call is the loudest voice in our lives, we can press on. Our strength is not in ourselves, but in our reliance on the Holy Spirit. Jesus didn’t tell His disciples to work harder or strategize more—He told them to pray. Prayer is our first line of offense, our source of power, and our act of dependence on God. We must be a people who see, pray, and then act—sent out to love, serve, and sacrifice for those around us. If we commit to seeing people as God does, loving rather than solving, we will see transformation in our city and in ourselves.
Key Takeaways
- 1. See People, Not Problems It is easy to view our city, our families, and our communities as a collection of problems to solve. But Jesus calls us to see people—to recognize their confusion, pain, and need for compassion. When we shift our perspective from fixing to loving, our motivations and methods change, and we begin to reflect the heart of Christ to those around us. [56:57]
- 2. The Fight Is Worth It God’s people do not run from the fight; we engage it. The fight for the soul of our city, for the hearts of our neighbors, is worth every sacrifice. Just as someone once fought for us, we are called to fight for others, seeing them as valuable and worth every effort, even when it means facing opposition or discomfort. [64:06]
- 3. God’s Call Must Be the Loudest Voice We will encounter criticism, setbacks, and resistance, but if God’s call is the loudest in our lives, we can persevere. Jesus pressed on despite opposition, focused on the Father’s will above all else. When we let God’s call drown out every other voice, we find the courage and resilience to continue the mission He’s given us. [69:44]
- 4. Radical Dependence on the Holy Spirit Our effectiveness is not rooted in our own strength, strategies, or charisma, but in our reliance on the Holy Spirit. Jesus’ first instruction to His disciples was to pray, not to work harder. True transformation—of ourselves and our city—comes only through prayerful dependence on God’s power, not our own. [75:52]
- 5. Act Now: Love in Action Seeing as God sees and praying for His help must lead to action. We are sent people, called to love, serve, and sacrifice today—not waiting for perfect conditions. When we commit to loving people as people, not as projects or arguments to win, we become agents of real change in our city and in ourselves. [81:43]
