Bible Reading
Luke 10:25-37“And behold, a lawyer stood up to put him to the test, saying, ‘Teacher, what shall I do to inherit eternal life?’”
[28:13]“He said to him, ‘What is written in the Law? How do you read it?’ And he answered, ‘You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength and with all your mind, and your neighbor as yourself.’ And he said to him, ‘You have answered correctly; do this, and you will live.’”
[28:19]“But he, desiring to justify himself, said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’”
[28:27]“Jesus replied, ‘A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he fell among robbers, who stripped him and beat him and departed, leaving him half dead.’”
[28:33]“Now by chance a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him he passed by on the other side.”
[29:36]“So likewise a Levite, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.”
[31:55]“But a Samaritan, as he journeyed, came to where he was, and when he saw him, he had compassion.”
[32:22]“He went to him and bound up his wounds, pouring on oil and wine. Then he set him on his own animal and brought him to an inn and took care of him.”
[32:26]“And the next day he took out two denarii and gave them to the innkeeper, saying, ‘Take care of him, and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I come back.’”
[32:37]“Which of these three, do you think, proved to be a neighbor to the man who fell among the robbers?”
[32:47]“He said, ‘The one who showed him mercy.’ And Jesus said to him, ‘You go, and do likewise.’”
[33:06]Matthew 28:19-20“Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit,”
[08:20]“teaching them to observe all that I have commanded you. And behold, I am with you always, to the end of the age.”
[08:49]Revelation 4:10“The twenty-four elders fall down before him who is seated on the throne and worship him who lives forever and ever. They cast their crowns before the throne, saying,”
[16:39]Matthew 16:18“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”
[14:44]Observation questions
- What question does the lawyer ask Jesus, and what question does he ask after Jesus confirms the command to love God and neighbor?
- What are the clear differences between the actions of the priest and Levite and the actions of the Samaritan? Consider what each person saw, where each person went, and what each person did. [31:39]
- What costly and practical steps does the Samaritan take to care for the wounded man, beyond simply feeling compassion? [32:26]
- What examples show that ministry and prayer were happening outside a church auditorium—in homes, cars, workplaces, and a shoe stand? [23:45]
Interpretation questions
- Jesus ends the story by asking who “proved to be a neighbor,” rather than defining which kinds of people qualify as neighbors. How does that change the focus from identifying worthy people to becoming a merciful person?
- The priest and Levite both saw the wounded man but passed by. What kinds of busyness, distraction, fear, or personal priorities can make a believer see pain without responding to it? [30:10]
- The Samaritan’s care involved time, physical effort, money, and continued responsibility. What does this reveal about the kind of mercy Jesus calls His people to show?
- Jesus is seen in the Good Samaritan: He cleans wounds, provides healing, pays the cost, and promises to return. How does receiving this mercy from Jesus prepare believers to show mercy to people who are hurting? [32:47]
Application questions
- Who is a person in your normal week—a neighbor, coworker, classmate, family member, or person you regularly see—who may be “on the side of the road” emotionally, spiritually, or practically? What is one specific way you could move toward that person this week? [33:48]
- Phones, routines, and hurry can keep people from noticing one another. What would it look like for you to lift your eyes and let your eyes, not only your words, communicate love this week? [31:20]
- Your workplace, home, vehicle, school, or neighborhood can become a platform for God. Where has God already placed you, and how could you make that place more available for prayer, encouragement, or a gospel conversation? [34:17]
- Is there a burden, grief, or unanswered prayer that you have been trying to hide? How might you allow trusted believers to pray with you and carry some of that pain with you? Tears are not weakness; they can become prayers before God. [18:48]
- In what area have you been thinking, “Someone else will do it”—whether praying for a person, meeting a need, serving, inviting someone, or sharing Christ? What would change if you asked, “If I do not do it, who will?” [40:47]
- What is one simple step your group could take to become more like a church without walls—caring for people in homes, praying for the city, or serving people where they already live and work? [36:39]
