Psalm 85 begins with a people looking back at the kindness of God. The psalmist remembers that God showed favor, restored fortunes, forgave iniquity, covered sin, and turned from fierce anger. God is the one who turns what is dead into something living, and even the cold, stony human heart needs that kind of turning. The church’s revitalization therefore does not begin with a new idea, a better program, or the right personality. Christ and his finished work stand at the center: he came for sinners, lived and died in their place, rose in victory, and brought them back to the Father.
The psalmist then moves from remembrance to asking. “Restore us again” becomes the cry of a people who know that God alone can bring life. Humility names the ways a church may have gone astray without turning that work into finger-pointing. Programs, personalities, self-reliance, backbiting, inhospitality, and inauthenticity cannot carry the weight of God’s purposes. God calls his people to ask, again and again, “Will you not revive us again, that your people may rejoice in you?” Revitalization is not finally about becoming impressive, flourishing, or nonignorable. God himself must become the jewel of the heart, so that his glory becomes impossible to ignore.
The psalmist also warns God’s people not to turn back to folly. Because God has turned toward his people in mercy, they must actively turn away from false hopes and walk in the path of wisdom. The church finds that path through devotion to God’s Word, prayer, the breaking of bread, love, service, encouragement, and worship. God promises shalom, not merely the absence of conflict but a deep well-being that comes from his presence dwelling among his people.
Psalm 85 finally gives a vision of a community overflowing with the goodness of God. Love and faithfulness meet together. Righteousness and peace kiss. This is a people marked by love that does not have quit in it, and by goodness that is both right and beautiful. The Lord gives what is good, but the harvest comes in his timing. Righteousness goes before him and prepares the way for his steps, so small acts of faithfulness done with great love become a place where God moves in power.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Remember Christ as revitalization’s foundation. Christ is not merely the starting line for a church that wants life again. His cross, resurrection, reign, and presence determine every step down the path. A church that moves on from Christ loses the only ground on which genuine renewal can stand. [11:53]
- 2. Ask God to revive his people. Dependence becomes visible when God’s people keep bringing their need before him. The deepest request is not for influence or visible success, but for joy in God himself. God’s answer turns the church from self-reliance into a people who know that life comes from him. [17:13]
- 3. Turn away from familiar folly. Folly often looks practical, promising growth through programs, personalities, or human strength. God calls his people to reject false hopes and to name the sins that quietly infect a church’s culture. Wisdom begins when God’s faithfulness captures the heart more deeply than lesser things do. [21:11]
- 4. Believe God’s promise of shalom. God’s peace is deeper than an easy season or the absence of hardship. His presence brings the complete well-being that his people cannot manufacture for themselves. Even hard and devastating circumstances cannot cancel God’s final purpose to bring good to his people. [24:09]
- 5. Practice small faithfulness with great love. God gives the harvest, and his people cannot force it to arrive overnight. Patient obedience prepares the way for his steps, even when the work feels small and unseen. Love that does not quit and righteousness that keeps showing up become soil where God brings life.
