35s
“See, churches all over are feeling this change, but present changes, challenges do not determine what lies ahead. Verse 18, because Jesus promises that the gates of Hades, in other words, the gates of death itself, cannot prevail against his church. And it's not because we will come up with the right answers. It's not because we will be the strong ones. It's not that we could ever work hard enough to bring those gates down, but only because those gates could not hold him.”
33s
“But the good news is that the blessing is bigger than any one congregation, bigger than our church, First Methodist denim. And what we can say with absolute certainty is that we are part of something much bigger than ourselves, something that will endure. Because the one we are joined to has already been through death's gates, and those gates could not contain him. And the church is his to build, his to name.”
34s
“Lord Jesus, you asked your disciple a question on a road, and he answered with words that he was given through a grace that he did not earn. For the sake of your church, Lord, for your world and for the lives gathered here in this place and at this moment, give us the same answer. Give us the faith to say it out loud. Take from our shoulders what was never ours to carry, and teach us, teach us, Lord, once again to trust the builder.”
