[45:44]Observation questions- What details in 2 Timothy 4 show that Demas was more than a casual acquaintance to Paul?
- What kinds of harmful actions are named as genuine church hurt—both in Paul’s experience and in the definitions given here? [40:20]
- What does Paul say about Mark in 2 Timothy 4:11, and how does that differ from the earlier conflict described in Acts 15? [45:31]
- In verses 16-17, what two very different responses does Paul describe: the response of people around him and the response of the Lord? [54:39]
Interpretation questions- Demas deserted Paul because he loved the present world. What makes abandonment by a close ministry partner especially painful compared with an ordinary disappointment?
- Paul clearly says that everyone deserted him, yet he asks that it not be counted against them. How does this show that forgiveness is not the same as pretending that nothing wrong happened? [50:26]
- Paul and Mark had a sharp disagreement, but later Paul calls Mark useful for ministry. What does their restored relationship suggest about humility, time, and reconciliation between believers? [46:26]
- Paul was not kept from ministry by abandonment; the Lord strengthened him so he could keep preaching. Why might hurt tempt a believer to step away from serving Jesus, and what does Paul’s example say about that temptation? [55:34]
Application questions- Is there a church-related wound in your life that needs to be honestly named before God? Was it genuine abandonment, betrayal, manipulation, abuse, or misuse of authority—or was it a disappointment or unmet expectation that needs a different response? [40:33]
- Have you ever called something “church hurt” when it was really frustration, disappointment, or feeling overlooked? What would spiritual maturity look like in that situation, while still taking real hurt seriously? [42:52]
- Is there someone whose actions still replay in your mind and make forgiveness feel impossible? What might it look like to make forgiveness a decision of the will, even while the emotions take time to heal? [52:03]
- Grace over grudges does not excuse evil or remove wise boundaries. Is there a grudge you need to release to God, while also taking appropriate steps to protect yourself or others from continued harm? [51:31]
- Paul’s ability to forgive was rooted in what Christ had done for him. How does remembering the grace you have received from Jesus change the way you view someone who has hurt you? [53:01]
- Have past church wounds moved you toward Jesus or made you pull away from Him and His people? What is one faithful next step that could help you depend on the Lord rather than remain isolated? [55:54]
- A different church may sometimes be needed for a season, but giving up on Christ’s church is not the goal. If you have been sitting on the sidelines, what gift, skill, or area of service might God be inviting you to use again when the time is right? [56:52]
