The pain of not belonging runs deep, especially when the question becomes whether God really wants someone in his church. The church is for all people, and that truth is good news for the outsider who wonders if Jesus has room for someone like that. The same truth also searches the heart that starts to think good church people must look, dress, speak, and behave a certain way.

God had set Israel apart as his chosen people so that the Savior would come from them. The ceremonial law worked like a jersey on a sports team, marking Israel as a people with a special purpose. God never meant that fence to become a weapon for pushing others away. God wanted his house to be “a house of prayer for all nations.”

The Pharisees twisted that good gift into a system of who was in and who was out. The Pharisees looked like the good church people, the ones who had it together, but Jesus tore into them because their righteousness was only a veneer over hypocrisy. The disciples had fallen into the same trap, thinking that looking like a Christian on the outside was the same thing as belonging to Christ. Jesus made clear that he is not looking for people whose hearts are far from him while the outside looks right.

Jesus then took his disciples outside the fence, into Tyre and Sidon, the wrong side of the tracks spiritually speaking. The Canaanite woman came from that place, carrying a nightmare no mother could fix. Her daughter was demon-possessed, and this woman cried out, “Lord, son of David, have mercy on me.” The disciples saw a foreigner using Israel’s words and wanted Jesus to send her away.

Jesus answered in a way that sounds hard: “It is not right to take the children’s bread and toss it to the dogs.” The woman did not argue that she deserved a place. Her faith clung to Jesus with the words, “Even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their master’s table.” The crumbs from Christ’s table were better than everything the world could offer.

Jesus called her faith great and healed her daughter at that moment. Peter had just been called dull, but this outsider was praised for faith. The place in the church is not earned by being the right kind of person. The place at Christ’s table is earned by Jesus alone, and by the grace of God, the church is for all people.
