2026/08/22: The Power of Christ's Resurrection

The tulip bulb picture makes resurrection plain in a sweet way. The bulb looks ugly and dead in the ground, but spring brings it back beautiful. Paul would probably smile at that little girl asking if Jesus wakes the dead up “fancier,” because 1 Corinthians 15 says that ordinary, broken bodies will be raised glorious, transformed, perfected, and better than anything now imagined.

Paul begins with the gospel he preached, the gospel the Corinthians received, the gospel in which they stood, and the gospel by which they were saved. Christ died for sins according to the Scriptures, was buried, and was raised according to the Scriptures. Paul places believing and preaching side by side because the one who proclaims Christ risen must first believe that the resurrection is a real historical event. The risen Christ was not an idea or a feeling. Christ was seen by eyewitnesses, and Paul’s confidence is basically, “Go ask them for yourself.”

Paul then shows how dreadful the consequences would be if Christ had not been raised. Christ would not be who he said he was, the cross would have no effect, preaching would be empty, faith would be empty, sins would remain unforgiven, and the dead would simply be gone. The word “empty” carries the idea of being in vain, fruitless, without truth or result. Without the resurrection, faith becomes a delusion. With the resurrection, Christ is the only hope.

Paul calls Christ the first fruits because his resurrection guarantees the harvest to come. The first Adam failed, but Christ, the last Adam, submits entirely to the Father and brings the rulership of this world back to God. Those who died in Christ will be raised at his coming, and the dead sleep makes that hope even clearer. When the believer closes the eyes in death, the next experience is the trumpet and the return of Jesus.

Paul answers the question about the resurrected body with the seed. The seed must cease being a seed before God brings forth the plant. The body now is perishable, weak, natural, and marked by decay, sickness, and death. The resurrected body will be imperishable, powerful, spiritual, and real, like Christ’s glorious body. Paul ends with victory. Flesh and blood, meaning fallen humanity, cannot inherit the kingdom without radical transformation. Christ will remove corruption and mortality, and death will lose its sting. The final meeting will be glorious, with the righteous dead raised, the living righteous changed, and friends whom death separated reunited, never more to depart.
