Why Christ’s Burial Matters: Death, Baptism, New Life

Paul sets the burial of Jesus right inside the “first of all” truths of the gospel. Christ died for sins according to the Scriptures, Christ was buried, and Christ rose again the third day according to the Scriptures. The burial is not extra. There is nothing extra in the Bible. The burial stands there because God put it there, and God put it there because it matters.

Scripture leaves no wiggle room about the death of Christ. Matthew speaks of Joseph receiving the body of Jesus. Mark, Luke, and John speak the same way. Jesus did not swoon. Jesus did not faint. Jesus died dead. The Romans knew how to kill a man, and the historical witnesses outside the Bible treated the crucifixion as fact. The women did not wander to the wrong tomb either. Mary Magdalene and the other Mary sat over against the sepulchre, the authorities knew the place, the tomb was sealed, and the guards were posted. The burial confirms the full payment for sin. Jesus cried, “It is finished,” because the wages of sin is death, not fainting, not suffering alone, but death. The wrath of God was satisfied through the shedding of blood and the giving of life. The burial is the receipt that the full price was paid. Christ never regretted paying that price. Hebrews says that for the joy set before him, he endured the cross, despising the shame. That joy included the glory of the Father and the salvation of sinners. Every rescued soul brought glory to the Lamb.

The burial also shows Christ’s victory in the unseen realm. Christ descended, freed the righteous dead, led captivity captive, and proclaimed to the spirits in prison that what looked like Satan’s victory was no victory at all. The powers of darkness were disarmed. The judgment of evil was sealed. Christianity is not hanging on at the tail end of defeat. Christ has already declared the victory.

The gospel must go to the nations because the King is coming, and every tongue, kindred, and people is invited to turn from sin and trust Christ alone. The burial also gives baptism its meaning.
