The Supremacy of Christ: Creator, Head, Redeemer

Paul grounds joyful endurance in the redemption Christ has already purchased. God has delivered guilty sinners from the domain of darkness and transferred them into the kingdom of his beloved Son. Christ has paid the ransom with his blood, and forgiveness means that suffering, trouble, and the mess of a fallen world do not get the final word.

Christ stands supreme over all creation. Paul calls him the image of the invisible God, not because Jesus is merely a picture of God, but because he is God in flesh. Christ existed before anything was made, created everything visible and invisible, and created every throne, dominion, ruler, and authority. The sun, moon, stars, animals, humanity, the spiritual world, and the whole universe exist through him and for him. Christ does not simply wind up creation and walk away. In him all things hold together. Without him, the world would spin apart.

Christ also stands supreme over the church. Paul calls him the head of the body because the body cannot function without its head. The church does not gather, worship, serve, or go on mission by its own strength. Christ gives life to his people through his death, burial, resurrection, and the power of the Holy Spirit. Christ is also the firstborn from the dead. Lazarus and others who were raised eventually died again, but Christ rose by his own power and is alive forevermore. His resurrection gives real hope because death and the grave have already been conquered.

Christ makes peace by the blood of his cross. Peace is more than the absence of fighting. Peace means right relationship with God. Sinful people were alienated, hostile in mind, and bent toward evil deeds, but Christ reconciles rebels through his body of flesh by his death. His blood accomplishes what human goodness never could, presenting his people holy, blameless, and beyond reproach before God.

Christ’s supremacy finally gets personal. Church attendance, service, and religious activity can become places to hide, but Jesus is not simply a good idea, a creator God far away, or the head of a religion. Christ is Lord, Savior, and supreme leader over the individual life. His salvation begins a lifelong work of sanctification, conforming redeemed people back into the image for which God created them. The hope of the gospel steadies believers when circumstances pile up, because happiness is fleeting but joy in Christ is eternal. Jesus remains on the throne, and nothing is kicking him off that throne.
