Bible Reading1 Corinthians 11:23-26 For I received from the Lord what I also passed on to you: On the night when he was betrayed, the Lord Jesus took bread, and after giving thanks, broke it, and said, “This is my body, which is for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
[26:47]Isaiah 53:4-7 Yet he himself bore our sicknesses, and he carried our pains; but we in turn regarded him stricken, struck down by God, and afflicted. But he was pierced because of our rebellion, crushed because of our iniquities; punishment for our peace was on him, and we are healed by his wounds. We all went astray like sheep; we all have turned to our own way; and the Lord has punished him for the iniquity of us all. He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth. Like a lamb led to the slaughter and like a sheep silent before her shearers, he did not open his mouth.
[31:29]Matthew 27:24-31 When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am innocent of this man’s blood. See to it yourselves!” All the people answered, “His blood be on us and on our children!” Then he released Barabbas to them and, after having Jesus flogged, handed him over to be crucified. Then the governor’s soldiers took Jesus into the governor’s residence and gathered the whole company around him. They stripped him and dressed him in a scarlet robe. They twisted together a crown of thorns, put it on his head, and placed a staff in his right hand. They knelt down before him and mocked him: “Hail, king of the Jews!” Then they spat on him, took the staff, and kept hitting him on the head. After they had mocked him, they stripped him of the robe, put his own clothes on him, and led him away to crucify him.
[32:54]Ephesians 1:7-8 In him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our trespasses, according to the riches of his grace that he richly poured out on us with all wisdom and understanding.
[37:43]Hebrews 9:11-14 But Christ has appeared as a high priest of the good things that have come. In the greater and more perfect tabernacle not made with hands (that is, not of this creation), he entered the most holy place once for all time, not by the blood of goats and calves, but by his own blood, having obtained eternal redemption. For if the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a young cow, sprinkling those who are defiled, sanctify for the purification of the flesh, how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal Spirit offered himself without blemish to God, cleanse our consciences from dead works so that we can serve the living God?
[38:14]Mark 8:34-38 Calling the crowd along with his disciples, he said to them, “If anyone wants to follow after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me. For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life because of me and the gospel will save it. For what does it benefit someone to gain the whole world and yet lose his life? What can anyone give in exchange for his life? For whoever is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will also be ashamed of him when he comes in the glory of his Father with the holy angels.”
[44:58]Observation questions- In 1 Corinthians 11:23-26, what does Jesus say the bread represents, what does the cup represent, and what are believers proclaiming when they receive them? [27:19]
- According to Isaiah 53:4-7, what words explain why Jesus was pierced and crushed, and whose iniquity was placed on Him?
- What actions of the soldiers in Matthew 27 show both the physical suffering and the public humiliation Jesus endured? [33:38]
- In Hebrews 9:11-14, what does Christ’s own blood accomplish that the blood of goats and calves could not accomplish? [38:22]
Interpretation questions- Jesus says, “Do this in remembrance of me.” Why is remembering Christ’s body and blood more than simply recalling a historical event? What should such remembrance stir in a believer’s heart? [36:46]
- Isaiah says that punishment for our peace was on Jesus. What does this show about the seriousness of sin and the cost of being made right with God?

- Jesus was innocent, yet He willingly suffered for sinners who did not deserve it. Where do you need to move from casual gratitude to deeper humility before the grace of God? [37:05]
- Christ’s blood cleanses the conscience so believers can serve the living God. Are there “dead works”—old habits, sinful patterns, or attempts to prove yourself—that need to be brought honestly before the Lord? [39:13]
