Darkness is coming, and Jesus knows it even when the Twelve cannot connect the dots. Opposition is rising, Herod has spilled John’s blood, the crowds are restless, the Pharisees are picking fights, and demons are afraid. Jesus will have a battle with darkness, just as every sinner will face the valley of the shadow of death. Readiness, however, is not a product of works. Jesus gives His disciples rest so that their hearts may be fixed on Him.
Jesus comes to Caesarea Philippi and asks, “Who do men say that the Son of Man is?” Jesus does not form a committee, check the temperature of the culture, or make Mary the center of the conversation. Jesus puts the question where it belongs: Who is He? Wrong preaching produces wrong listening, wrong listening produces wrong faith, and wrong faith leads to hell. Christ does not want any man, woman, or child to remain without a Savior in their sins.
Peter answers for the disciples and for Christendom of all time: “You are the Christ, the Son of the living God.” This confession is the rock upon which Christ builds His Church. The rock is not Peter himself, but Peter’s confession that Jesus is the promised Christ, the eternal Son of God made flesh, conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the blessed Virgin. Christ is not merely another prophet, not merely Mary’s son, and not merely a good example. God comes in the flesh to save sinners from the hell of this world and the next.
Faith receives this confession as the Father reveals the Son. Faith does not come by earning, buying, or completing a class. Faith comes by hearing the right preaching of God’s Word, hearing the message of Christ and His works for sinners. Christ died, rose, baptized, washed away sins, conquered death, and gives eternal life by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone.
Rest is therefore not idle time. Rest is the time when Christ calls weary sinners to cease from their works and hear His words. Christ gathers saints around His gifts, corrects wrong faith with right teaching, binds hurting hearts with comforting medicine, and eases weary souls with the forgiveness of sins. The confession of Christ prepares sinners not only for tomorrow, but for eternity, so that death may be faced in the true faith.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Christ alone makes sinners ready Readiness for death does not rise from moral effort, religious busyness, or personal resolve. Christ makes sinners ready through His death, resurrection, baptism, and forgiveness. Faith rests in what He has done when darkness draws near. [37:27]
- 2. Wrong faith begins with wrong listening The danger is not merely hearing an imperfect opinion about Jesus. Wrong words about Christ can form a false faith that leaves sinners still carrying their sins. The Word must therefore remain clear about who Christ is and what He has done. [32:53]
- 3. Peter’s confession is the Church’s rock The Church stands on the confession that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of the living God. Christ is not one holy man among many, but God in flesh for the salvation of sinners. Every true Christian confession returns to this center. [34:20]
- 4. Rest means hearing Christ’s gifts Christian rest is not empty inactivity or escape from the world. Christ calls weary souls away from trusting their works and into the hearing of His saving Word. His forgiveness is the medicine that binds up hearts burdened by sin and death.
