Paul’s words in Colossians 1:15-18 matter because they are not passive religious vocabulary. Grace is what God did to provide salvation through Jesus. Faith is the response required when the Holy Spirit convicts a rebellious heart and draws it toward Christ. Knowledge of God’s will is not merely information either. It is experiential knowledge, learned while someone walks alongside, guides, corrects, and helps another person grow.
The church’s struggle with children and young people leaving after high school exposes a painful lack of active discipleship. Active faith does not leave the next generation to figure it out alone. The church needs believers willing to come alongside children, youth, young adults, median adults, and senior adults, not because they know everything, but because they are willing to obey. Every age needs someone helping them live under the authority of Christ.
Paul grounds that obedience in the supremacy of Jesus. Jesus is “the image of the invisible God,” the perfect likeness and manifestation of the Father. When the Father looks into the mirror, He sees Jesus. Jesus makes the invisible God known, and His presence empowers believers to live beyond their own ability. The question is not whether a person feels capable. The real question is whether that person will surrender to the God already at work in that life.
Paul also calls Jesus “the firstborn of all creation.” Jesus is not part of creation. Jesus is Creator, the One through whom all things came into being, for whom all things exist, and in whom all things hold together. His power is not limited by the brokenness of the world, the darkness around the church, or the weakness of those He calls.
Christ is also head of the body, the church. The church is the called-out assembly, gathered for His business and His purposes. From Genesis onward, God’s purpose has been to bring creation under His authority. The Great Commission continues that same purpose: make disciples, teach them, and help them live under Christ’s lordship. Jesus, raised from the dead as the firstborn from the dead, must have first place in everything. His presence, power, and purpose call the church to give God a willing yes.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Grace and faith are active words [27:54] Grace shows what God has done through Christ to rescue sinners who could not rescue themselves. Faith describes the real response of a heart confronted by the gospel, convicted by the Spirit, and brought to choose Christ. Salvation is free, but it never leaves a person untouched or inactive. [27:54]
- 2. Discipleship requires willing obedience [37:12] Discipleship is not reserved for experts, paid workers, or people who feel especially gifted. The call is for believers to walk beside others, including younger believers who need to see faith lived in ordinary life. Willingness to obey matters more than an inflated sense of ability. [37:12]
- 3. Jesus perfectly reveals the Father [43:28] Jesus is not simply a messenger pointing toward God from a distance. Jesus is the exact likeness and manifestation of the invisible God, bringing the Father into view. His presence means that Christian service rests on God at work, not personal strength. [43:28]
- 4. Christ holds all creation together [49:56] Creation exists by Christ, through Christ, for Christ, and in Christ. His authority reaches over visible and invisible realities, rulers and powers, life and death. The church can enter darkness without fear because Christ remains the originating center and sustaining power of all things. [49:56]
- 5. Christ’s lordship gives the church purpose [01:01:27] Christ alone is head of the church, and His body exists for His business rather than human preferences. The purpose has remained the same from Genesis to the Great Commission: bring lives under God’s authority. Every surrendered yes becomes part of that purpose.
