Family resemblance reaches deeper than a mom’s smile or a dad’s height. Unhealthy patterns of anger, pride, fear, selfishness, addiction, and broken responses can feel so baked in that people start saying, “This is just who I am.” Christ, however, desires to transform his people and their families into his likeness. The reality may be that “grandpa is still in your bones,” but Christ is in the hearts of those who trust him.
Paul names this good news as “Christ in you, the hope of glory.” Paul rejoices in suffering, not because suffering is good in itself, but because Christ uses it to make himself known and to bless others eternally. Christ’s affliction for salvation lacks nothing, because the cross was finished, done, completed. Gospel ministry, however, carries the ongoing cost of bringing that finished salvation to people through suffering servants who take up their cross and follow Jesus.
Paul received a stewardship from God to make the word of God fully known. The church serves, loves neighbors, meets needs, and carries burdens, but Christian faith cannot detach good deeds from proclaiming Christ. Christ must be proclaimed. Paul toils with energy that is not his own, because God powerfully works within him. Fruitful seasons and heavy seasons both expose the same reality: people cannot manufacture fruit, change themselves, or control outcomes. Christ calls his people to faithfulness, then holds the results in his hands.
The mystery hidden for ages has now been revealed: Jesus is the promised King, salvation reaches the Gentiles, and Christ himself dwells in his people by the Holy Spirit. God no longer confines his presence to a temple building and the Holy of Holies. Christ makes his people his temple. Christ in believers is not wishful thinking or a call to white knuckle change; it is the power source for real transformation over a lifetime.
The hope of glory also reaches beyond present struggles. Christ promises a future where sin, suffering, and shatteredness are gone, and his people are fully transformed in his presence. Christian maturity, then, is more than Bible facts. Paul pictures maturity as encouraged hearts, believers knit together in love, settled assurance, wisdom found in Christ, discernment against plausible lies, and firmness of faith. Christ contains all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, so the good life gets reordered around knowing him.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Christ in you changes everything [00:27:56] Christ’s presence means believers are not trapped by family history, present weakness, or repeated failure. Change is often slower than anyone wants, but it is never hopeless when Christ has made his home in a person. The deepest reality is not merely what has shaped someone, but who now lives within them. [27:56]
- 2. Ministry carries a real cost [00:16:33] Gospel ministry includes disappointment, rejection, burdens, and sometimes straight up persecution. Christ does not waste that suffering when it is endured for the sake of making him known. The cost is real, but Christ supplies the strength his servants do not possess on their own. [16:33]
- 3. Christ must be plainly proclaimed [00:18:32] Good works matter, but good works alone do not announce the gospel. Christ calls his people to shine the spotlight on what he has done, not merely to hope others connect the dots. Faithfulness means loving people deeply while speaking clearly about the hope found in Jesus. [18:32]
- 4. Maturity grows through knit-together love [00:37:52] Christian maturity does not produce isolation, pride, or hyper-independence. Christ forms believers through the ordinary faithfulness, prayers, service, encouragement, and presence of his people. Love requires actually knowing others and functioning as a real part of the body. [37:52]
- 5. The hope of glory is the prize [00:31:44] Future glory is not a consolation prize for a hard life. Christ promises complete wholeness in a world where all that is good, pure, right, and true remains forever. That future gives present suffering a horizon that bitterness and loss cannot take away.
