John 16 brings Jesus to the last words he leaves before the cross, and those words are, “Be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.” Jesus says that to men who are nowhere near cheer, courage, or joy. Jesus tells them the awful is going to come first, but the awesome will come later. Jesus does not hide the grief, but he does tell them grief will not get the last word.

Jesus says he is leaving so that the Holy Spirit will help. The Holy Spirit is not an it, not a force, not some religious influence floating around out there. The Holy Spirit is God. Full stop. The Bible makes sense of life because God tells the truth about the future, the resurrection body, the judgment, the destruction of wickedness, and the final victory of the righteous. The Spirit came with a singular purpose, to glorify Christ, to shine a light on why Jesus came, to seek and to save the lost.

Jesus then says the apostles’ hearts will rejoice, and no one will take that joy away. The cross will scatter them, confuse them, and break everything they thought they understood. But the resurrection will change everything. Jesus will rise, and their joy will become stronger than threats, prisons, beatings, and death.

The Father himself loves those who love the Son and believe he came from the Father. The world can take possessions, comfort, reputation, and even life, but the world cannot take the truth of the Spirit, the presence of Jesus, or the love of God. Jesus leaves dying-man words with his people: take courage, because he has overcome the world.
