The Centrality of Christ: Gospel, Growth, and Fruit

Colossians opens with Christ right in the center. Paul identifies himself as an apostle of Christ Jesus by God’s will, and Timothy stands with him as a trusted brother. The Colossian Christians are described in two locations at once: at Colossae and in Christ. That matters, because Paul is not writing to people outside the family. He calls them saints, faithful brothers and sisters, even while real dangers and real shortcomings sit close by.

Grace and peace come from God the Father, and grace has to come first. Grace is the basis of new life in Christ, and peace is the well-being that flows from that grace. Paul’s thankfulness happens in prayer, because the joys and concerns of the church matter enough to bring before God. Faith, love, and hope show that real life is already there. Faith is not a blind jump in the dark. Faith is being persuaded that Christ is true and then trusting him with life.

Faith in Christ produces love for the saints. The real fruit of faith is not secret knowledge, and it is not just rule keeping. The real fruit of faith is love, especially love for the undeserving, the same way God has loved the undeserving. Hope looks forward with strong confidence because it is preserved in heaven. The source of that hope is the word of truth, the gospel.

The gospel is not some small mystery religion tucked away in Asia Minor. The gospel is bearing fruit and growing all over the world, just like it bore fruit in Colossae when Epaphras came to town. That day mattered more than any famous king passing through, because the greatest day in a person’s history is the day the gospel comes. The seed of truth has to be planted, and those who have received the seed now plant the seed.

Paul’s prayer moves from thanksgiving to intercession. The knowledge of God’s will is not an Easter egg hidden from believers. God reveals his will in his Word, and that knowledge is meant to influence life. Wisdom understands the truth, and understanding puts the truth into practice. A worthy walk bears fruit, grows in the knowledge of God, receives strength, and gives thanks.

God strengthens believers with power according to his glorious might. The struggle is not wasted when God uses it to make people pure. The Father has qualified believers for an inheritance in the light, rescued them from the domain of darkness, and transferred them into the kingdom of the Son he loves. In Christ, redemption means being bought back and set free, and forgiveness means the debt has been canceled.
