Day 1: The Marathon Gate and Narrow Way
Jesus compared discipleship to a marathon’s starting gate and grueling race, not just a one-time entry. True life comes through both entering Christ’s narrow gate and walking His demanding way daily. This path requires endurance, not comfort-seeking. The Christian life isn’t about avoiding trials but staying connected to Jesus through them. Like a runner focused on the finish, disciples fix their eyes on becoming like Him. [17:03]
“Enter through the narrow gate. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. But small is the gate and narrow the road that leads to life, and only a few find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14, ESV)
Reflection: What practical choice this week would reflect your commitment to the narrow way over the broad road? How does viewing discipleship as a marathon change your approach to struggles?
Day 2: Loved as the Father Loved Jesus
God loves believers with the same fierce, unshakable love He poured on Jesus. This truth demolishes insecurity when embraced. Just as an earthly father treats all his children equally, our Heavenly Father shows no partiality between Christ and His followers. Living in this reality frees us from fear of lack or rejection. [09:40]
“I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.” (John 17:23, NIV)
Reflection: Where do you still struggle to believe God loves you as He loved Jesus? How might living this truth change your next difficult conversation?
Day 3: Discipleship Through the Spirit’s Disclosure
The Holy Spirit doesn’t just teach about Christ—He reveals Jesus’ hidden inner life. Like uncovering a diamond’s facets, He shows us Christ’s uncomplaining service and不求回报 love. This transformation happens not through imitation but inner renewal, turning wolves into lambs from the inside out. [43:08]
“He will glorify me because it is from me that he will receive what he will make known to you. All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will receive from me what he will make known to you.” (John 16:14-15, NIV)
Reflection: What hidden attitude of Jesus (patience, humility, courage) do you most need the Spirit to disclose in you? How will you create space for that revelation today?
Day 4: Purification Through Becoming, Not Just Seeing
Our hope isn’t merely Christ’s return, but becoming like Him when He appears. This expectation drives daily purification—not rule-keeping, but heart alignment. Like a bride preparing for her groom, disciples actively shed whatever hinders intimacy. Every conviction of conscience becomes a stepping stone toward Christlikeness. [38:01]
“Dear friends, now we are children of God, and what we will be has not yet been made known. But we know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is. All who have this hope in him purify themselves, just as he is pure.” (1 John 3:2-3, NIV)
Reflection: What specific impurity has the Spirit recently convicted you about? What practical step will you take today to cooperate with His purifying work?
Day 5: Serving Without Expecting Earthly Returns
Jesus served without demanding gratitude, even sleeping outdoors when none offered hospitality. The Holy Spirit reshapes us to serve as unto Christ alone, not seeking human approval. When we stop keeping score of others’ responses, service becomes joyful worship rather than transactional duty. [49:00]
“The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’” (Matthew 25:40, NIV)
Reflection: When have you last felt disappointed by someone’s lack of gratitude? How could reframing that act as service to Christ change your heart?
Sermon Summary
The call to discipleship begins by setting Mark 16 beside Matthew 28. Mark 16 says to go into all the world and preach the gospel, but Matthew 28 says to go and make disciples. The difference is very great. Preaching may bring people to Christ because they want to go to heaven, but making disciples brings people into a life of following Jesus wherever He is.
The person of Christ becomes the center, not heaven, not comfort, not a trouble-free eternity. Jesus is the bridegroom, and the disciple wants to be with Him, whether in a hut or a palace, on earth or in eternity. Heaven without this love becomes like marrying a man for his house. True commitment says the place is not the point, the beloved is the point.
The Holy Spirit makes this relationship real. The Spirit does not merely give boldness or gifts, though He can change a timid person into a fearless witness. The Spirit brings a disciple to admire Jesus and to love Him. John 17:23 becomes central because Jesus prays that the Father loves His disciples just as He loved Jesus. That one truth removes insecurity, fear, and anxiety because the Father is not partial between His eldest Son and His other children.
Romans 8:28 and 29 show what the greatest good really is. The good is not mainly money, a job, marriage, healing, or earthly blessing. The good is being conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. Matthew 7 also shows that Christian life is not only a small gate but also a narrow way. The gate begins the race, but the way must be walked, taking up the cross daily.
The love of Christ is seen not only at Calvary but also in Gethsemane, where Jesus chose the cross rather than leave a sinner to hell. First John says love comes because He first loved. Song of Solomon gives the language of the bride: “My beloved is mine and I am his.” Commitment to Christ is a love relationship before it is a set of doctrines.
First John 3 says the hope is not only seeing Jesus, but becoming like Him. John 16 says the Holy Spirit discloses the hidden life of Jesus, not merely His outward miracles. The Spirit shows His inner attitudes: serving without expecting thanks, giving without complaint, sleeping under the trees without dropping hints. This inner walk with Jesus is the secret of a happy, fearless, complaint-free life.
Key Takeaways
1. Disciples follow, not merely believe [01:34] Matthew 28 makes disciple-making more than getting people ready for heaven. A disciple is one who wants Jesus Himself, not merely the benefits Jesus gives. The difference is like loving a bridegroom rather than loving the house he owns. Faith becomes shallow when comfort replaces Christ as the treasure. [01:34]
2. The Father loves disciples like Jesus [09:03] John 17:23 gives a staggering foundation for security: the Father loves the disciples just as He loved Jesus. That truth does not make a person careless, but deeply settled. Fear about the future loses its strength when the Father’s love is seen as impartial and complete. A saved sinner stands loved in the Son’s own measure. [09:03]
3. Christlikeness is the greatest good [15:00] Romans 8:28 cannot be separated from Romans 8:29. The “good” God works toward is conformity to the image of Christ, not merely better circumstances. Earthly blessings are small drops compared with becoming like Jesus inside. The highest prayer is not escape from trouble, but transformation through it. [15:00]
4. Love others through Christ [25:24] The body works because each member is connected to the head, not because the members grip one another directly. Relationships become strained when love remains merely horizontal. Through Christ, respect and love can continue even when another person insults, neglects, or fails to return gratitude. The vertical relationship purifies the horizontal one. [25:24]
5. The Spirit discloses hidden Christ [43:08] John 16 says the Holy Spirit does not merely tell facts about Jesus, but discloses what is hidden. The Spirit reveals the inner life of Christ: His attitudes, His freedom from complaint, His lack of expectation from people. Outward imitation easily becomes acting, like a wolf wearing lamb’s clothing. Inner transformation makes Christlike behavior natural and real. [43:08]
Bible Reading Matthew 28:19 (ESV) "Go therefore and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit."
John 17:23 (ESV) "I in them and you in me, that they may become perfectly one, so that the world may know that you sent me and loved them even as you loved me."
Romans 8:28-29 (ESV) "And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose. For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers." Observation Questions
What distinction does the sermon highlight between "preaching the gospel" (Mark 16:15) and "making disciples" (Matthew 28:19)?
According to John 17:23, how does Jesus describe the Father’s love for His disciples?
In Romans 8:28-29, what is identified as the ultimate "good" God works toward in believers’ lives?
How does the sermon contrast the "gate" and the "way" in Matthew 7:14? [17:03]
Interpretation Questions
Why is the Father’s love for believers being "just as [He] loved Jesus" (John 17:23) foundational for overcoming fear and insecurity?
How does defining the "good" in Romans 8:28 as "being conformed to the image of Christ" change our perspective on trials and blessings?
What does it mean for the Holy Spirit to "disclose" Christ’s hidden attitudes (John 16:14) rather than merely teaching facts about Him? [43:38]
Why might prioritizing "becoming like Christ" (1 John 3:2-3) over "seeing Christ" transform daily priorities?
Application Questions
In what practical ways can you shift from seeking comfort/benefits from God to pursuing Him as your primary treasure this week? [02:08]
How would your response to a difficult circumstance change if you fully believed God loves you exactly as He loves Jesus? [09:55]
Identify one area where you tend to resent serving others (e.g., feeling unappreciated). How can you reframe that act as serving Christ directly? [46:50]
What specific attitude of Jesus (e.g., serving without expecting thanks, resting in the Father’s care) do you most need the Holy Spirit to reveal and cultivate in you? [53:24]
When have you prioritized "earthly blessings" over Christlikeness? What step can you take to align your prayers with Romans 8:29 this month?
How can you intentionally connect with Christ daily (e.g., prayer, Scripture) to strengthen your "vertical relationship" and improve horizontal relationships? [25:24]
What habit or thought pattern do you need to "purify" (1 John 3:3) to become more like Jesus in your hidden life?
Sermon Clips
And a person who just wants to go to heaven when he dies I don't think he's a disciple. A disciple is one who wants to follow Jesus wherever he is. And if you want to follow Jesus, here is John 17 is for you. Now, if you only want to go to heaven when you die, then John 17 is not for you. But if you love Jesus and you want to be with him, John 17 is for you. [00:08:34]
So there's a gate and a way. Any preacher who tells you there's only a gate is a deceiver. Jesus said there's a small gate and a narrow way. At the end of it is life. So I enter through the gate when I accept Christ as my savior. I take up the cross and walk every day and that's how I walk the way and the end of it I find light eternal light with with Jesus forever and ever and ever. [00:17:55]
God the Father loves me just as much as he loved Jesus Christ when Jesus was on the earth. You go and ask the average Christian, do you believe God loved his son Jesus on earth? Yes. Do you believe God loves you as much as he loved Jesus? Oh, they say, how can that be? Well, that's why their life is so shallow. [00:09:35]
Some hidden matter which you cannot see and the Holy Spirit uncovers it and shows you. In other words, not the external life of Jesus, how he cared for sinners and he loved sinners and he forgave sinners. Not that. But disclose means he takes away the surface and shows you what Jesus was like inside. I want to see what Jesus is like inside because I want to be like him inside me. [00:43:41]
So it's our relationship with Christ that is most important. So here in Romans 8:28 it says all things work together for good to those who love God. And the next verse tells us what that good is. And that good is that God has destined that we should be conformed to the image of Jesus Christ. That is the good. [00:14:58]
And that's why he says, John says we love him because he first loved us. And I've discovered from that the reason why many Christians don't love Jesus fervently. They love money or they love their job or they love some girl or some boy or something other than Christ. I'll tell you why. Because they have not understood how much Jesus loved them. [00:22:51]
That is more than preaching the gospel. It's go. He says, "Go and make disciples of all nations." See, Matthew 28:1 19 is not go and preach, but go and make disciples. There's a difference between preaching and bringing people to Christ because they want to go to heaven and making them into disciples. [00:01:40]
Have you reached Christ standard of purity? I have not. But I'll tell you honestly, I'm pressing on every day. I'm seeking with all my heart to cleanse myself to become a little more like Jesus every day. That is the passion of my life and that should be the passion of your life too if you're a true disciple of Jesus. [00:40:50]
So I want to first of all deliver you from the desire to go to heaven and change you to have a desire to be with Jesus wherever he is. Cuz that is what commitment to Christ means. [00:03:41]
I'm looking forward to being with my bridegroom, Jesus Christ, for all eternity. And I don't care where he is. If he lives on the earth, I'll be happy to be with him on earth forever. I once told the Lord, Lord, if I be ready to be in hell if you're there because hell will become heaven for me. [00:02:30]
And I tell you this, it changed my life. And if you believe it, it'll change your life also. All the insecurity and fear, what will happen to me in the future? And this problem has come into my life. And that problem has come into my life. And all that insecurity will completely disappear if you believe this one truth. [00:10:25]
Seek to love people through Christ. In other words, let your primary relationship not be horizontal with other people but vertical with Jesus Christ. So we have to build up our vertical relationship with Jesus Christ and have a commitment to him if we want to really live this Christian life. [00:27:27]
It changed my life and God gave me a foundation not based on doctrine of justification or sanctification or second coming. No, based on my beloved Jesus loves me and I love him. [00:32:23]
And if you have that type of Christian life, my dear brothers and sisters, your life will be supremely happy here on earth also. You will have no complaints. you'll have no problems with other people because you're not taken up with a comfortable life. I'm not at all interested in a comfortable life or a luxurious life either on earth or in eternity. I mean that honestly. [00:02:59]
What did the disciples do? The first 12 disciples, they were with Jesus all the time. Wherever he went, they were there. He sent them out, but then they would come back to him. That is disciplehip. It's like a husband and wife are always wanting to be together. [00:04:56]
