Belief in Christ: Victory Over Death Now and Then

John draws near the end of his first letter by pressing the same truth home again: theology is not just something a person says, it is the ground a person stands on. A person’s theology shapes reality, shows up in priority, and now must result in victory. John knows that false teaching is always trying to get a foothold in the church, because Satan knows that if belief about God gets corrupted, mayhem follows in the church and in individual lives.

John keeps tying truth to agape love because the church stands up to the world and stands out from the world by thinking rightly about God and acting rightly toward each other. Solid theological ground keeps people from sinking into the quagmire of heresy. Truth works like the training of federal agents who study real money so closely that counterfeit bills become easier to spot. Knowledge of the real thing makes the lie less powerful.

Belief, in John’s sense, is not a vague religious nod. Acts 16 shows belief as life changing reality. The jailer moves from suicide to hospitality, from fear to baptism, from panic to rejoicing. Biblical belief changes the whole direction of a life, because believing in the Lord Jesus means entrusting the whole life to him.

John names the first victory plainly: victory over death. The testimony is that God has given eternal life, and this life is in his Son. The one who has the Son has the life. The one who does not have the Son of God does not have the life. Eternal life is the prize, the thing, the whole point of the testimony.

God has placed eternity in the hearts of human beings, so mankind remains incurably religious. People instinctively know that the grave is not the end, but the religions of the world often leave eternal life as an elusive goal, tied to a moving target of good works and sacrifices. Christianity does not leave people guessing. Eternal life is not elusive, but it is exclusive. It is not exclusive in who can have it, because God desires all people to be saved, but it is exclusive in where it is found: in Christ and Christ alone.

Jesus is the door, the way, the truth, and the life. Salvation is in no one else. Christ is not a weapon to keep people out, but the only way all people may come in. Eternal life is also now and then. Heaven will bring the fullness of that life, but the believer already has the life of God now, with his peace, joy, power, and purpose. Every victory comes from the victory Jesus won at the cross and the empty tomb, through his body broken and his blood shed.
