Chosen to Be Witnesses: Know, Believe, Understand God

Isaiah 43:8-10 brings God’s people into a courtroom and puts the gods of the culture on trial. The idols cannot foretell tomorrow, verify their own words, or produce one witness who can say they truly delivered what they promised. God alone declares the truth, shows His glory in the heavens, and proves His power through His faithfulness to His people.

The blind eyes and deaf ears reveal what happens when God’s people put their eyes on the world. The shiny things of the world slowly stop spiritual sight, clog spiritual ears, and pull a life into that dangerous place of one foot in the kingdom and one foot in the world. Sanctification calls God’s people to keep surrendering the things held most tightly, because those things often reveal where the heart still refuses to trust Him.

God’s call to His people does not end in condemnation. God brings the hungry, the wandering, the blind, and the deaf near because He wants to redeem their stories. God takes the mess and makes it into a masterpiece, but revelation must lead to transformation. The people who claim God as their God become the very witnesses who help others see and hear again.

The word witness carries the idea of repeating and testifying. God’s people first repeat His goodness until their own hearts remember that God is good, that God has not given up, and that there is no condemnation in Christ Jesus. The witness then goes over that truth again with a spouse, children, friends, and people in the community. Spiritual conversations become like a mirror, because the truth spoken to another heart comes back and strengthens the one who speaks it.

The word servant does not mean chains, jackals, or a miserable religious life. God’s servant stands in a trusted covenant relationship with Him, works out the things that dishonor Him, and becomes bound to serve through love. God breaks the chains of addiction, sin, and the enemy, and His love makes His people say with Peter, “Where would I go?”

God’s deliberate choice rests on love and purpose, not merit. God chooses His people to know Him personally, experimentally, and relationally, not merely as a mental idea. Belief must move into action, and understanding must become discernment between truth and falsehood, the narrow road and the wide road, Christ and the antichrist. God’s people are chosen to testify of His person, His position as Lord over all, and His power. His love must reach through them as they live it out first at home and then everywhere else, like broadcast seeders spreading the truth of the one true God.
