Ephesians opens up the wonder of a real kingdom transfer. Paul says that when a person says yes to Christ, God does not enroll that person in a behavior modification program. God picks sinners up out of the devil’s family and places them in the Father’s family. Old things pass away, all things become new, and the believer receives a new kingdom identity, a new King, and a new kingdom walk.
Ephesians 1 presses into the sovereignty of God, and that truth gets bigger than any little three pound brain can handle. God has the first word and the last word. His ways are not human ways, and his thoughts are not human thoughts. Yet the point is not to figure God out like a math problem. The point is to love him more, trust him more, and become an extravagant worshiper who holds nothing back for the risen Savior.
Paul says that before the foundations of the world, God loved and chose his people in Christ. God did not need a family, because Father, Son, and Holy Spirit already lived in perfect community. Still, God desired a family. Before there was a world, before there was sin, before there was a cross, there was a Father who desired a family. God knew creation would turn away, and still God made a way to bring sinners back.
Ephesians keeps repeating the only way back to the Father: through Christ, through Christ, through Christ. Baptism does not bring a sinner back. Keeping the Ten Commandments does not bring a sinner back. Being a good religious person does not bring a sinner back. Jesus is the way, the truth, and the life. Jesus is the door. The just God paid the price for the unjust sinner, and he did it through the blood of his Son.
Paul’s response is praise. Election, predestination, and foreknowledge can bring big theological conversations, but the bottom line is that God is patient, not willing that any should perish, and calls people everywhere to repentance. God pours out grace, not in a little sprinkle, but lavishes it on those who belong to his dear Son. Redemption means Christ bought sinners out so he could bring them in. Freedom comes with family. The believer can say, “My Father,” because Jesus purchased that access with his blood. The only proper response to holy God is a life of praise, a walking, talking, living testimony to the One who did what sinners could not do for themselves.
Key Takeaways
- 1. God desires a family God does not need anyone, because Father, Son, and Holy Spirit already dwell in perfect love. Yet before creation, before sin, and before the cross, God desired a family and made a way for broken people to come home. That truth humbles the believer because salvation begins not with human worth, but with divine desire. [47:14]
- 2. Redemption brings people into family Redemption is not only release from bondage. Christ bought sinners out so he could bring them in, giving them the privilege to call God “Father.” Freedom without belonging would still leave the soul wandering, but grace gives both rescue and a home. [60:14]
- 3. Grace is lavished, not sprinkled God does not ration grace like a cautious giver. Ephesians says grace is poured out, lavished on those who belong to the dear Son. The believer’s security rests not on performance or failure, but on the richness of God’s kindness in Christ. [56:20]
- 4. Praise is the proper response The sovereignty of God is too big to fit inside human categories. Paul does not lead the church into prideful debate, but into worship before a holy God who made a way. Praise becomes more than singing, because the whole life becomes a testimony to grace. [55:26]
- 5. Through Christ, and Christ alone The Father brings sinners to himself through Jesus, not through religion, rule keeping, or good behavior. John 14 and Ephesians 1 say the same thing: the way back to the Father has a name. Faith must move beyond believing about Jesus to receiving Jesus as Savior. [45:19]
