Paul opens Ephesians with worship because the doctrine of the church begins not with human faithfulness, but with the grace of God. God has blessed His people in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places. Those blessings are truly theirs now by faith, permanently kept beyond every earthly threat, and waiting to be enjoyed in their fullness. The grandeur of that promise is meant to leave believers with the stunned wonder of a child told that every good gift is theirs.
God’s grace is sovereign grace. God chose His people before the foundation of the world, not because He saw promise, goodness, faith, or potential in them, but because He chose to show grace. The choice came entirely from His own free and uncoerced desire to do good. That truth humbles the sinner, secures the Christian, and gives all credit for salvation to God alone.
God’s choice is also deeply personal. God did not merely improve the condition of rebels or spare them from judgment at a distance. God predestined them for adoption through Jesus Christ. The Father took sinful people who had followed the devil’s ways and brought them into His own family with affection, tenderness, and permanence. Grace is not merely judicial. Grace is familial.
Christ’s blood reveals the cost of that grace. God’s holiness could not ignore sin, and God’s love was determined to save sinners. Christ therefore took human flesh, bore wrath in the place of His people, shed His blood as the price of redemption, and opened the way for forgiveness. Biblical grace can never be separated from the cross, because grace is costly benevolence, blood grace, death grace, redemption grace.
Paul repeatedly says that these blessings come “in Christ.” Union with Christ means that God has permanently linked His people to His Son. Christ’s righteousness becomes theirs, their sin is assigned to His death, His resurrection guarantees theirs, and His access to the Father becomes their access. Christ is not merely a rich friend who gives gifts. Christ is the centerpiece of God’s plan to unite all things in heaven and earth, and believers have been included in Him.
The Holy Spirit seals this inheritance and gives present assurance of future glory. God’s people have an inheritance in God Himself that makes every temporary uncertainty smaller. Paul’s repeated refrain gives the final purpose: all of this is “to the praise of his glory.” Grace makes the church worshiping, humble, loving, gracious, and amazed that God chose to bring sinners into the party of Christ.

Key Takeaways
- 1. Grace begins with God’s choice God’s choice does not rest on foreseen worth, future achievement, or hidden spiritual potential. God chose freely, from His own goodness, before any believer could offer Him anything. That truth destroys boasting without producing despair, because the same grace that chose also preserves. [21:30]
- 2. Adoption is personal, not distant God did not simply pull sinners out of danger and leave them at arm’s length. God brought rebels into His own family and gave them the right to call Him Father through Christ. The tenderness of adoption means that grace is not generic benevolence but affectionate, covenantal love. [27:22]
- 3. Grace cost Christ His blood Christ’s cross shows that forgiveness is never God pretending sin did not matter. Christ bore the judgment that sin deserved so that God could remain holy while bringing sinners near. Every true thought about grace must stay within sight of the crucified Son. [32:57]
- 4. Union with Christ secures everything Christ’s life, righteousness, resurrection, inheritance, and access to the Father belong to those who are in Him. God has joined His people to His Son with an unbreakable bond. Fear loses its final word because Christ rose, and those united to Him will rise as well. [37:55]
- 5. Inheritance reshapes present anxieties The Holy Spirit guarantees an inheritance in God that will outlast every earthly loss and uncertainty. Temporary concerns still matter, but they cannot define a future secured by Christ. Hope grows when eternity is seen as longer and more substantial than the brief days of this life.
