Every person is born with a tendency to serve the wrong masters—whether it’s comfort, control, career, or comparison. These “masters” promise fulfillment but ultimately lead us away from God’s best for us. Our hearts are easily drawn to idolize things that were never meant to guide us, and unless we recognize this, we will keep ending up at the wrong destination in life. The first step is to honestly see our own propensity to let something other than God direct our choices and affections. [06:26]
Romans 6:16 (ESV)
Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
Reflection: Which “master” (comfort, control, career, etc.) most often tries to take God’s place in your life, and what is one practical way you can recognize and resist its pull today?
God alone is the true Master who created us, knows us, and loves us beyond measure. When we look to Him instead of lesser masters, we find the security, purpose, and hope our hearts long for. Like a masterful conductor leading an orchestra, God invites us to join in His beautiful design, trusting that His promises are sure even when our circumstances seem uncertain. He is the only one worthy of our full devotion, and He calls us to trust Him with our fears and anxieties. [14:26]
Genesis 15:1 (ESV)
After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.”
Reflection: What is one fear or anxiety you are facing right now, and how can you intentionally bring it to God as your Master instead of trying to solve it on your own?
When we place our faith in God as our Master, He counts us as righteous—not because of our own efforts, but because of His grace. Just as Abram believed God’s promises and was declared righteous, we too are invited to trust in God’s faithfulness, even when we don’t see how things will work out. Our righteousness is a gift, not something we can earn, and it comes through faith in Jesus Christ, who fulfilled God’s promises for us. [18:01]
Genesis 15:6 (ESV)
And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
Reflection: In what area of your life do you need to stop striving to “earn” God’s approval and instead rest in the righteousness He gives you by faith?
Following Jesus means leaving behind every other master—no matter how successful or comfortable they may seem—and embracing a new purpose and identity in Him. Like Simon Peter, who left his nets and his old life after encountering Jesus’ power and holiness, we are called to a radical shift: to see Jesus not just as a good teacher, but as Lord and Master over all. This surrender leads us into a life of true meaning and mission, as we follow Him wholeheartedly. [25:52]
Luke 5:8-11 (ESV)
But when Simon Peter saw it, he fell down at Jesus’ knees, saying, “Depart from me, for I am a sinful man, O Lord.” For he and all who were with him were astonished at the catch of fish that they had taken, and so also were James and John, sons of Zebedee, who were partners with Simon. And Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from now on you will be catching men.” And when they had brought their boats to land, they left everything and followed him.
Reflection: What is one “net” or former master you need to leave behind in order to follow Jesus more fully this week?
Serving God as Master often means embracing sacrifice, stepping out of comfort, and trusting Him with the unknowns of life. When fears or anxieties arise, we are invited to cast them on God rather than seeking control or turning to other sources for security. God’s truth and presence are what sustain us, and He alone deserves our daily devotion. As we prioritize His voice over the world’s, we find the courage to live for Him, even when it’s inconvenient or countercultural. [28:54]
1 Peter 5:6-7 (ESV)
Humble yourselves, therefore, under the mighty hand of God so that at the proper time he may exalt you, casting all your anxieties on him, because he cares for you.
Reflection: What is one specific anxiety or area of control you can surrender to God today, and how will you demonstrate your trust in Him as your Master?
Every one of us is guided by something—a compass, a master, a set of priorities that shapes our decisions and direction. But just as a broken compass leads us astray, so too do the wrong masters. Many of us, often without realizing it, serve masters like comfort, societal approval, or the illusion of control. These masters promise fulfillment but ultimately lead us to disappointment and confusion, taking us to destinations we never intended to reach.
Scripture makes it clear that our sinful nature inclines us to serve these false masters. Paul, writing to the Romans, reminds us that we are either serving sin or serving God—there is no neutral ground. Anything in our lives—career, cash, choice, certainty, comparison, convenience, or credit—can become a master if we allow it to take God’s rightful place. Recognizing this tendency is the first step toward freedom.
But we were not designed to serve these lesser masters. God alone is the master we were created to follow. Like a masterful conductor leading an orchestra, God invites us to join in the beautiful symphony of his purposes. The story of Abram in Genesis 15 shows us that God’s promises are trustworthy, even when our circumstances seem impossible. Abram brought his fears and doubts to God, and in response, God gave him a vision of countless stars—a promise of a future beyond his imagination. Abram’s faith was counted as righteousness, a gift that is now available to all who trust in Christ.
The call, then, is to leave behind our former masters and serve Jesus radically. Simon Peter’s encounter with Jesus in Luke 5 illustrates this transformation. At first, Peter saw Jesus as a respected teacher, but after witnessing a miracle, he recognized Jesus as Lord and Master. Peter left everything—his career, his comfort, his old ambitions—to follow Jesus. This is the invitation for each of us: to make the switch from seeing Jesus as just a wise teacher to embracing him as the master of our lives.
Whatever master you are tempted to serve—comfort, coolness, control, or any other—God calls you to embrace sacrifice, prioritize his truth, and trust him with your anxieties. Only by serving Jesus as our master will we find ourselves on the right path, living the life we were designed for.

Romans 6:16 (ESV) — > Do you not know that if you present yourselves to anyone as obedient slaves, you are slaves of the one whom you obey, either of sin, which leads to death, or of obedience, which leads to righteousness?
Genesis 15:1-6 (ESV) — > After these things the word of the Lord came to Abram in a vision: “Fear not, Abram, I am your shield; your reward shall be very great.” But Abram said, “O Lord God, what will you give me, for I continue childless, and the heir of my house is Eliezer of Damascus?” And Abram said, “Behold, you have given me no offspring, and a member of my household will be my heir.” And behold, the word of the Lord came to him: “This man shall not be your heir; your very own son shall be your heir.” And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.

Once we see that we naturally serve the wrong masters, it is time to believe that God is the master we were designed to serve. Our faith needs to come into play here. We need to believe that God is the master we were designed to serve. [00:10:42] (18 seconds) #GodTheGreatConductor
I want to encourage you, when fears or anxieties come your way, instead of looking to one of these other masters to be the solution that we need, I encourage you to look to God's voice in his word. Turn to God's revealed word, discover who he is, the promises that he has for us, that he will never leave us or forsake us, that he loves us beyond any other love, the whole universe through, and we can trust that our master has our well -being under control. Abraham learned that serving God as master can ultimately lead to God giving us the gift of righteous status in his eyes through faith as Abram had faith in God. Take a look at verse 6. It says, And he believed the Lord, and he, God, counted it to him as righteousness. God looked at Abram, and even though Abram wasn't perfect, God said, Because you've placed your faith in me, I'm going to consider you righteous for that. We can't get our righteousness from anything else. We can't get our righteousness from tipping a little extra when we're checking out at Starbucks. We can't get our righteousness from getting a really nice gift for grandma every year at Christmas. Our righteousness can only come as a gift from God because Jesus has the righteousness and we need it. And he gives it to those of us who place our faith in him. The third step to serving the right master is to leave behind your former masters to serve Jesus radically. Serve behind every other master you used to serve and serve Jesus in a radical way. [00:20:15] (18 seconds) #CalledOutOfDarkness
There's an old way we used to live, an old master we used to serve. But now that Jesus has called us out of darkness into his marvelous light, we now serve a God who is worth serving. We now serve a God who designed us for a relationship with him. We now serve a God who has good and love for us. [00:22:53] (24 seconds) #OnlyOneMasterJesus
We got to take the switch from just seeing Jesus as a good teacher to seeing him as the master of the universe, the God over all creation. That is the switch that Jesus invites every person to, and so I want to ask, have you made that switch? [00:27:22] (19 seconds) #GodOverLifePlans
If you get the sense, if God is seemingly speaking to you that the master of comfort is one that you turn to time and time again, I want to encourage you to embrace sacrifice. Embrace that biblical model of even inconvenience for the sake of serving God and advancing the gospel, stepping out of that personal ease to serve God in his mission. Are you sacrificing so that you can serve God? [00:28:21] (33 seconds) #PrioritizeGodsTruth
``Because the reality is every single one of us serve a master every single day if you serve any other master outside of god you will be led time and time again to the wrong destination to the wrong place but if you serve jesus as your master you'll find yourself in the right place doing the right things serving the master you were designed to embrace so is adonai your lord do you serve adonai because he is the only one who deserves to be our master you [00:31:00] (43 seconds)
