Choosing Faith Over Fear in Life's Storms

Summary

Good morning, church. Today, we delve into the topic of fear, a distressing emotion that arises from the anticipation of harm, loss, or pain. Fear is a universal experience, and many of us carry it with us daily. We explored Mark 4:35-41, where Jesus calms the storm, to understand how we can face fear with hope and faith.

Fear is one of Satan's greatest tactics, especially in recent years, as statistics show an increase in fear among believers. However, as followers of Christ, we have great hope in the face of fear. Jesus initiated the journey across the Sea of Galilee, knowing a storm awaited. This teaches us that obedience to God doesn't exempt us from life's storms. Instead, it assures us of His presence with us through them.

The disciples, expert fishermen, were terrified by the storm, fearing for their lives. They turned to Jesus, who was asleep, and questioned His care for them. This reflects our tendency to question God's presence and care during our storms. Yet, Jesus' response reveals His authority over nature and our circumstances. He calms the storm with a command, demonstrating His unmatched power.

Fear often reveals areas where we lack trust in God. It can either push us towards Him or away from Him. Our perspective of Jesus influences our response to fear. If we see Him as small and distant, our fear grows. But if we recognize His greatness and authority, our faith strengthens. We must choose to use our imagination for faith, envisioning God's power and love at work in our lives.

In the face of fear, we have a choice: to embrace faith or succumb to fear. God has not given us a spirit of fear but of power, love, and a sound mind. We are encouraged to be still, quiet our minds, and focus on God. By doing so, we can experience His peace and rest, even amidst life's storms. Let us choose faith over fear, trusting in the God who is with us and for us.

Our faith is not about avoiding storms but trusting God through them. In Mark 4:35-41, Jesus initiated the journey across the Sea of Galilee, knowing a storm awaited. This teaches us that obedience to God doesn't exempt us from life's storms. Instead, it assures us of His presence with us through them. As we navigate our own storms, we can find comfort in knowing that Jesus is with us, guiding us through the challenges we face. [08:35]

Isaiah 43:2 (ESV): "When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you."

Reflection: What current storm in your life can you invite Jesus into, trusting His presence and guidance through it?

Day 2: Recognizing Jesus' Authority
The disciples' fear during the storm reveals a common human tendency to question God's care. Yet, Jesus' authority over the storm demonstrates His power and presence. Our perspective of Jesus influences our response to fear. If we see Him as small and distant, our fear grows. But if we recognize His greatness and authority, our faith strengthens. In moments of fear, we are reminded to shift our focus from the storm to the One who has authority over it. By acknowledging Jesus' power, we can find peace and assurance in His ability to calm the storms in our lives. [13:28]

Psalm 89:8-9 (ESV): "O Lord God of hosts, who is mighty as you are, O Lord, with your faithfulness all around you? You rule the raging of the sea; when its waves rise, you still them."

Fear reveals areas where we lack trust in God. It can either push us towards Him or away from Him. When fear arises, it is an opportunity to examine our hearts and identify where we need to deepen our trust in God. By focusing on His promises and faithfulness, we can transform our fear into a catalyst for spiritual growth and reliance on Him. [22:52]

2 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV): "But he said to me, 'My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.' Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me."

We are encouraged to be still, quiet our minds, and focus on God. By doing so, we can experience His peace and rest, even amidst life's storms. Choosing faith over fear is an intentional decision to trust in God's promises and His presence with us. it makes sense to me and it's it's the simple equation was is I'm in the storm all right you're in a storm Jesus is sleeping well I'm in a storm Jesus is sleeping it must equate to Jesus must not care it was a simple equation I'm in a storm I'm going through things and I'm like looking at Jesus and he's asleep and so you come to this conclusion that that Jesus does not care here's the thing they were afraid yes because of the storm but I think in part also their teacher who they've spent time with who claimed to love them who claimed to care for them in the moment when they feel like they deeply needed him the most what was he doing he was sleeping and they're like do you not care there were perishing they they asked him a question but they're doing more than asking him a question they're not just asking him a question they're making this accusation against him and it makes me think how quick we are to make these accusations oftentimes in a form of question against God when we face the storms of lives God where where are you what why did you let this happen do you even care like have you ever been there are you there now you you're in this storm and it seems like Jesus is not it seems like Jesus is sleeping and so you make an assumption in these accusations against him you must not care listen are you experiencing distance from your relationship with God because of these accusations [00:13:56] (126 seconds) Edit Clip

he's not asking because he didn't know when God asks questions is actually for revelation is to reveal something he's revealing something it's like he's communicating to them they did not trust him fear listen to me fear is a revelation it reveals to us the areas that we don't trust God if you're fearful in this area and and I get this this is like this is all of us all of us fear right but fear is a revelation it indicates the area in our lives where we don't trust God but you think but aren't the aren't the disciples justified in their fear is it isn't it understandable is it obvious like you read this story you get why they're fearful isn't fearful a part a normal part of the human experience many of us are fearful here's the thing the question isn't if you fear feel fearful the question isn't whether or not the questions whether or not you wallow in it in it if if if you would choose to sit in it if you choose to become friends with if you will be absolutely gripped and crippled by it if you make a an agreement with it here's a bold statement and I'm not trying to be offensive and so if this feels offensive I want you to take it before the Lord but I believe this if you are afraid of anything in an ongoing manner it is not from God actually we see in scripture it is a part of the devil's scheme a strategy in our life to get us to live in fear and to wallow in it first Peter chapter 5 verse 8 says be sober -minded be watchful your adversary the devil prowls around like a roaring lion seeking someone to [00:22:19] (128 seconds) Edit Clip

He wants you to be afraid. He wants you to be anxious in our struggles. He wants our response to be fear and doubt. He wants us to be worried and fearful about a million things in your life. Daily. He's daily. Him and his team is walking around roaring. He wants you to look at this and that and that and this and wants you to be fearful. And, and many of you know it's working in some of your lives. [00:23:27] (29 seconds) Edit Clip

But the Bible says God has not given us a spirit of fear, a disposition, a character trait. It is not in your Christian DNA to be fearful. [00:24:03] (11 seconds) Edit Clip

I believe it is so true that fear sets in, why? Because of what we imagine. We have this imagination of what things might be, and our imagination runs wild to fear. [00:24:46] (14 seconds) Edit Clip

You can imagine how God in his infinite power and wisdom and love is able to work on your behalf, how he, like Ephesians chapter 3 verse 20 says, is able to do exceedingly, abundantly, above all that we can ask, go imagine. You can take what you're going through and tap your faith into it and imagine how God can work it out. [00:27:00] (23 seconds) Edit Clip

God's faithfulness in your life and I want to encourage you if he's been faithful before he's not going to leave you he'll be faithful again so Jesus displays his authority over nature and now the disciples they have this different perspective look at what happens verse 4 41 says and they were filled with great fears a whole different kind of fear and said to one another who then is this that even the wind of the sea obey him they go from do you even care to who is this I love this shift he goes from sleeping Jesus little small sleeping Jesus in the stern to big saving Jesus he just speaks and the wind and the way the thing that was got them are super afraid he speaks and it's now gone says they were filled with great fear but this is the right kind of fear this is this is a reverence and I think this is a very real picture of the necessary shift that we need to have when you and I as believers we face fear the shift of of of going from minimizing Jesus to having a big picture of Jesus this shift between always going to to God and telling him how big your storm is sometimes you gotta look at your storm and tell him the storm how big your God is this necessary shift that needs to take place and I think that this is what God is up to you in you and I's lives and I believe like what is the greatest thing that God can do in your life I think this is it and I think this is what he's up to the greatest work that God does in your life you know what it is it is to reveal himself to you and I think this is true I've heard a pastor say this when our experience does not match our expectations [00:33:31] (129 seconds) Edit Clip
