Bible ReadingExodus 32:1-35Verse 1: “When the people saw that Moses delayed to come down from the mountain, the people gathered themselves together to Aaron and said to him, ‘Up, make us gods who shall go before us. As for this Moses, the man who brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’”
[40:02]Verses 2-4: “So Aaron said to them, ‘Take off the rings of gold that are in the ears of your wives, your sons, and your daughters, and bring them to me.’ So all the people took off the rings of gold that were in their ears and brought them to Aaron. And he received the gold from their hand and fashioned it with a graving tool and made a golden calf. And they said, ‘These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!’”
[43:10]Verses 5-6: “When Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it. And Aaron made a proclamation and said, ‘Tomorrow shall be a feast to the LORD.’ And they rose up early the next day and offered burnt offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down to eat and drink and rose up to play.”
[47:32]Verses 7-10: “And the LORD said to Moses, ‘Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. They have turned aside quickly out of the way that I commanded them. They have made for themselves a golden calf and have worshiped it and sacrificed to it and said, “These are your gods, O Israel, who brought you up out of the land of Egypt!”’ And the LORD said to Moses, ‘I have seen this people, and behold, it is a stiff-necked people. Now therefore let me alone, that my wrath may burn hot against them and I may consume them, but of you I will make a great nation.’”
[56:03]Verses 11-14: “But Moses implored the LORD his God and said, ‘O LORD, why does your wrath burn hot against your people, whom you have brought out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a mighty hand? Why should the Egyptians say, “With evil intent did he bring them out, to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth”? Turn from your burning anger and relent from this disaster against your people. Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, your servants, to whom you swore by your own self, and said to them, “I will multiply your offspring as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have promised I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.”’ And the LORD relented from the disaster that he had spoken of bringing on his people.”

[48:45]Verse 4: “You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness of anything that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.”
[50:45]Exodus 31:16-17Verses 16-17: “Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.”
[01:11:31]Observation questions- What were the people afraid of when Moses delayed on the mountain, and what did they ask Aaron to make for them? [40:02]
- What did Aaron use to make the calf, and what does the passage say he did with the gold?
- What offerings and celebration did Israel connect to the golden calf, even though Aaron called it a feast “to the LORD”? [47:32]
- When God offered to make Moses into a great nation, what reasons did Moses give as he pleaded for Israel? [58:33]
Interpretation questions- Israel could still see God’s glory on the mountain, yet they wanted something they could see, touch, and bow before. Why can visible and familiar things feel more trustworthy than waiting on the unseen God? [41:22]
- Aaron used God’s name in connection with an idol. What does this show about trying to mix worship of God with something else that holds a person’s deepest trust? [48:07]
- The gold, tools, and effort used for the calf were gifts and resources Israel already had. How can good things such as money, ability, comfort, relationships, or freedom become tools for returning to an old bondage? [46:26]
- Moses did not take the chance to make himself great; he pointed back to God’s power and God’s promises. What does Moses’ response show about humility and standing on God’s Word when personal glory is available? [58:39]
Application questions- What is one “visible answer” you are tempted to grab when God seems delayed—control, comfort, money, approval, a relationship, distraction, or something else? How might that thing become a golden calf in your life? [42:24]
- Israel looked backward toward the images of Egypt after God had brought them out of Egypt. Is there an old pattern, habit, or way of thinking that feels familiar to you even though Christ has called you out of it? What would it look like to turn forward again? [52:44]
- “Half right is still all wrong.” Are there places where you are tempted to keep Christ nearby while putting your real hope in prosperity, personal success, comfort, or what other people say about you? [01:11:09]
- Aaron’s excuse hid his own responsibility: he claimed the calf simply came out of the fire. When you sin or drift from God, what excuses are easiest for you to make? What would honest repentance sound like instead? [01:03:26]
- Restlessness can lead a person to manufacture an answer rather than trust God. Where are you currently waiting on God, and what could it look like this week to rest, trust, and obey rather than force a solution? [01:13:45]
- Moses remembered God’s promises and prayed for God’s glory rather than his own. In a situation where you want recognition, control, or a quick outcome, how could you turn the attention back to God? [01:00:05]
- Christ alone deals with sin and brings real freedom. If you have trusted Christ, how does His mercy and intercession give you confidence to repent instead of hiding in shame? If you have not trusted Him, what is keeping you from coming to Him for forgiveness and freedom? [01:18:23]
