Self control starts with the simple truth that God always knows what he is doing, even when calamity makes it look like he is nowhere around. God can be present the whole time, but storm, anger, anxiety, and heaviness can pull the eyes away from him. Biblical self control is not just human discipline, diet plans, gym routines, or trying harder in the flesh. Biblical self control is the Spirit of God empowering thoughts, emotions, and decisions to line up with God’s will and God’s word.

Obedience is the real heart of self control. Hebrews says that even Jesus, the Son of God, “learned obedience from the things he suffered.” That truth removes the idea that following God means skipping the training. Suffering does not mean God lost control. Suffering can become the place where obedience gets formed.

Fear and anger both come from the same root, a lack of control. Anger rises when someone else cannot be controlled. Fear rises when tomorrow, health, finances, or outcomes cannot be controlled. The answer is not grabbing harder for control, but giving control back to God and letting his word light the next step.
