Philippians 1:21-3021 For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain.
[20:31] 22 If I am to go on living in the body, this will mean fruitful labor for me. Yet what shall I choose? I do not know!
[20:31] 23 I am torn between the two: I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far;
[20:31] 24 but it is more necessary for you that I remain in the body.
[20:31] 25 Convinced of this, I know that I will remain, and I will continue with all of you for your progress and joy in the faith,
[20:31] 26 so that through my being with you again your boasting in Christ Jesus will abound on account of me.
[20:31] 27 Whatever happens, conduct yourselves in a manner worthy of the gospel of Christ. Then, whether I come and see you or only hear about you in my absence, I will know that you stand firm in the one Spirit, striving together as one for the faith of the gospel
[20:31] 28 without being frightened in any way by those who oppose you. This is a sign to them that they will be destroyed, but that you will be saved—and that by God.
[20:31] 29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,
[20:31] 30 since you are going through the same struggle you saw I had, and now hear that I still have.
[20:31] John 16:33“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
[30:00] Daniel 6:16-2316 So the king gave the order, and they brought Daniel and threw him into the lions’ den. The king said to Daniel, “May your God, whom you serve continually, rescue you!”
[31:36] 17 A stone was brought and placed over the mouth of the den, and the king sealed it with his own signet ring and with the rings of his nobles, so that Daniel’s situation might not be changed.
[31:36] 18 Then the king returned to his palace and spent the night without eating and without any entertainment being brought to him. And he could not sleep.
[31:36] 19 At the first light of dawn, the king got up and hurried to the lions’ den.
[31:36] 20 When he came near the den, he called to Daniel in an anguished voice, “Daniel, servant of the living God, has your God, whom you serve continually, been able to rescue you from the lions?”
[31:36] 21 Daniel answered, “May the king live forever!
[31:36] 22 My God sent his angel, and he shut the mouths of the lions. They have not hurt me, because I was found innocent in his sight. Nor have I ever done any wrong before you, Your Majesty.”
[31:36] 23 The king was overjoyed and gave orders to lift Daniel out of the den. And when Daniel was lifted from the den, no wound was found on him, because he had trusted in his God.
[31:36] Observation questions
- What two desires does Paul describe in Philippians 1:21-26, and what reason does he give for remaining alive?
- According to Philippians 1:27-30, what does Paul want the Philippian believers to do together when they face opposition or suffering?
- What does Jesus promise his disciples in John 16:33, and what does he make clear they should still expect in this world?
- What details in Daniel 6:16-23 show that Daniel’s danger was real, while also showing where his trust was placed? [31:36]
Interpretation questions
- Paul says that “to live is Christ” and that continued life means “fruitful labor.” What does this show about the purpose of a believer’s ordinary life, even when life is hard?
- Paul deeply desires to be with Christ, yet he chooses to think about what will help the Philippians grow in faith. How does Paul’s example hold together hope for heaven and faithfulness in the present? [35:32]
- Jesus does not promise a trouble-free life, but peace “in me.” What is the difference between Christian hope and pretending that painful circumstances are not painful? [29:28]
- Daniel was surrounded by lions, and Paul was confined in prison. What might it mean for believers to look beyond their circumstances without denying the seriousness of what they face? [32:16]
Application questions
- What circumstance has been holding your attention most tightly lately—a diagnosis, grief, conflict, financial pressure, exhaustion, the news cycle, or something else? What would it look like to name that prison honestly before God without giving it the final word? [36:38]
- Where are you tempted to put life on hold until circumstances improve? What is one small way you could choose hope and meaningful life this week rather than waiting for “someday”? [36:58]
- What would real rest look like for you this week? Is there a phone habit, overloaded commitment, late-night worry pattern, or false sense of responsibility that you need to set down for a time? [37:04]
- What small act of faithfulness would strengthen hope in your life right now: opening Scripture, coming to Bible study, attending a support group, serving someone, praying honestly, or simply showing up? [37:15]
- Who is carrying something heavy and may need encouragement this week? What specific step could you take—sending a text, making a call, writing a note, or sitting with them—to remind them that God is not finished with them? [37:31]
- When fear or discouragement presses in, how could Philippians 1:21 and John 16:33 shape a simple prayer for your situation: “Christ, be glorified in me. Help me choose life, hope, and faithfulness here”? [38:07]
