Bible ReadingIsaiah 44:9-20 “All who fashion idols are nothing, and the things they delight in do not profit. Their witnesses neither see nor know, that they may be put to shame. Who fashions a god or casts an idol that is profitable for nothing? Behold, all his companions shall be put to shame, and the craftsmen are only human. Let them all assemble, let them stand forth. They shall be terrified; they shall be put to shame together. The ironsmith takes a cutting tool and works it over the coals. He fashions it with hammers and works it with his strong arm. He becomes hungry, and his strength fails; he drinks no water and is faint. The carpenter stretches a line; he marks it out with a pencil. He shapes it with planes and marks it with a compass. He shapes it into the figure of a man, with the beauty of a man, to dwell in a house. He cuts down cedars, or he chooses a cypress tree or an oak and lets it grow strong among the trees of the forest. He plants a cedar and the rain nourishes it. Then it becomes fuel for a man. He takes a part of it and warms himself; he kindles a fire and bakes bread. Also he makes a god and worships it; he makes it an idol and falls down before it. Half of it he burns in the fire. Over the half he eats meat; he roasts it and is satisfied. Also he warms himself and says, ‘Aha, I am warm, I have seen the fire!’ And the rest of it he makes into a god, his idol, and falls down to it and worships it. He prays to it and says, ‘Deliver me, for you are my god!’ They know not, nor do they discern, for he has shut their eyes, so that they cannot see, and their hearts, so that they cannot understand. No one considers, nor is there knowledge or discernment to say, ‘Half of it I burned in the fire; I also baked bread on its coals; I roasted meat and have eaten. And shall I make the rest of it an abomination? Shall I fall down before a block of wood?’ He feeds on ashes; a deluded heart has led him astray, and he cannot deliver himself or say, ‘Is there not a lie in my right hand?’”
[49:15] [50:36]Isaiah 44:1-8 “‘But now hear, O Jacob my servant, Israel whom I have chosen! Thus says the LORD who made you, who formed you from the womb and will help you: Fear not, O Jacob my servant, Jeshurun whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on the thirsty land, and streams on the dry ground; I will pour my Spirit upon your offspring, and my blessing on your descendants. They shall spring up among the grass like willows by flowing streams. This one will say, “I am the LORD’s,” another will call on the name of Jacob, and another will write on his hand, “The LORD’s,” and name himself by the name of Israel.” Thus says the LORD, the King of Israel and his Redeemer, the LORD of hosts: “I am the first and I am the last; besides me there is no god. Who is like me? Let him proclaim it. Let him declare and set it before me, since I appointed an ancient people. Let them declare what is to come, and what will happen. Fear not, nor be afraid; have I not told you from of old and declared it? And you are my witnesses! Is there a God besides me? There is no Rock; I know not any.”’”
[31:56] [32:12]Joshua 24:14-15 “‘Now therefore fear the LORD and serve him in sincerity and in faithfulness. Put away the gods that your fathers served beyond the River and in Egypt, and serve the LORD. And if it is evil in your eyes to serve the LORD, choose this day whom you will serve, whether the gods your fathers served in the region beyond the River, or the gods of the Amorites in whose land you dwell. But as for me and my house, we will serve the LORD.’”
[40:18] [40:25]Psalm 115:1-8 “Not to us, O LORD, not to us, but to your name give glory, for the sake of your steadfast love and your faithfulness! Why should the nations say, ‘Where is their God?’ Our God is in the heavens; he does all that he pleases. Their idols are silver and gold, the work of human hands. They have mouths, but do not speak; eyes, but do not see. They have ears, but do not hear; noses, but do not smell. They have hands, but do not feel; feet, but do not walk; and they do not make a sound in their throat. Those who make them become like them; so do all who trust in them.”
[59:08]Observation questions- In Isaiah 44:1-8, what promises does God make to Jacob and Israel before the passage turns toward the courtroom scene? [32:31]
- In Joshua 24:14-15, what choices does Joshua put before the people, and what possible “fourth option” is noticeably missing? [43:05]
- In Isaiah 44:9-20, what details in the craftsman’s process make idol worship look both foolish and dependent? [52:47]
- According to Isaiah 44:20 and Psalm 115:1-8, what are the results of trusting idols for the worshiper? [59:49]
Interpretation questions- Isaiah 44 begins with comfort, help, and the promise of God’s Spirit, and then moves into a case against idols. Why might God place these two things side by side in the same chapter? [47:33]
- Joshua tells the people to choose whom they will serve, and the human heart is presented as always worshiping someone or something. How does that shape the way idolatry should be understood today? [42:58]
- The craftsman in Isaiah makes a god that fits his own hands, scale, and desires. How does that picture help explain why customized religion is not a small problem but a form of self-rule? [55:29]
- Isaiah says the idolater “feeds on ashes” and “cannot deliver himself.” What does that reveal about why false gods feel convincing at first but fail in the moment of real need? [58:51]
Application questions- Idols often go underground and hide inside good things like work, family, achievement, appearance, comfort, or success. Which of those is most likely to compete for first place in the heart right now, and what makes it so persuasive? [39:39]
- False gods make promises and false warnings: “If you have me, you’ll be fulfilled,” and “If you lose me, life won’t be worth living.” What is one promise or warning like that that has felt powerful lately? [46:11]
- God is the only one big enough to build a whole life upon. Where has too much weight been placed on something created to hold up identity, peace, or hope? [46:47]
- “Is there not a lie in my right hand?” is a searching question. Is there anything being held tightly right now that may be asking for trust, emotional energy, or obedience that belongs to God? [52:05]
- God says, “I formed you,” “I have blotted out your transgressions,” and “Return to me, for I have redeemed you.” Which of those truths is most needed right now, and how could remembering it loosen the grip of a rival love? [01:01:00]
- The way out of false worship is not just loving idols less, but loving God more. What practices tend to stir real affection for God in daily life, and which one would be worth renewing this week? [01:01:47]
- God’s people are called to worship the One who formed them rather than the things they form or control. Where is there a temptation to keep life manageable and controlled instead of surrendering that space to God? [01:02:43]
