Choose Eternal Over Easy: Living Raised with Christ

Colossians 3 sets the whole life of faith on one foundation: “if then you have been raised with Christ.” Paul begins with identity, because everything that follows comes from being brought from death to life through Christ. The seat upgrade image gives the shape of that change: faith is not squinting from the nosebleeds anymore, but living from an elevated point of view. Christ has not merely handed out a better seat, but has adopted his people into the family that owns the stadium.

Paul says the raised life chooses eternal over easy. The things above are not some vague religious mood, but the will, kingdom, and righteousness of Christ. Sanctification starts small, in the ordinary places where time, energy, attention, appetite, and ambition show what the heart is really chasing. The heart learns to ask whether the one life being lived is moving people closer to Christ or further from him.

Paul then moves from the heart to the mind. A heavenly perspective looks at suffering, pressure, deadlines, relationships, and trouble through eternal logic, not through whatever the world calls successful or popular that day. Christ is seated at the right hand of God, and that means present affliction does not get the final word. Paul roots this perspective in the promise that life is “hidden with Christ in God,” secure now and waiting to appear in glory.

Paul then presses the raised life into actual conduct through a wardrobe change. The old self, the old Adam, must be put to death, not managed or dressed up. Its appetites run after sexual immorality, impurity, evil desire, and covetousness, trying to fill a hunger that never gets satisfied. Its tongue and temper tear down relationships through anger, malice, slander, and obscene talk.

Paul calls for those old clothes to be taken off so the virtues of Christ can be put on. Compassion, kindness, humility, meekness, patience, and forgiveness are not soft decorations, but the actual shape of Spirit-formed life. Love holds all of it together, not as sentiment, but as servanthood. Jesus shows that love with a towel around his waist, washing the feet of men who would betray, deny, and run, and then carrying that love all the way to the cross.

Paul brings the raised life to peace. The peace of Christ is the umpire, the one that gets the final say when life is complicated and relationships are tricky. Christ calls his people chosen, holy, beloved, and secure. The raised life keeps its eyes on what Christ has done and what Christ will do, because in him nothing this side of heaven can take that new life away.
