Kingdom formation begins with the goal of Ephesians 4, where the graces given to the church are meant to bring the church into maturity. Formation can sound very serious, like fasting, prayer, meditation, study, and a rule of life. But Jesus makes maturity look different than the super disciplined, grumpy, “I’ve got it all together” version that often gets imagined.

Mark 10 puts children right in the middle of the question. The disciples see children as an interruption, as something to move aside while adult things happen. Jesus gets indignant and says, “Let the children come to me. Do not hinder them.” The kingdom belongs to such as these, and whoever does not receive the kingdom like a child shall not enter it. Jesus does not treat the children as a distraction from important ministry. Jesus makes them the picture of kingdom maturity.

Childlike faith is not childishness. Paul says to put childish things away, because childishness can be self centered and immature.
