Celebrating Women's Inherent Value and Spiritual Family

Summary

Today is a day to honor and give thanks for mothers, but even more, to celebrate all women as God’s precious creations, wonderfully made in His image. From the very beginning in Genesis, God’s design for women was not just as child-bearers or helpers, but as beloved daughters with inherent value, treasured for who they are before anything they do. This truth is often overlooked, yet it is foundational: our worth is not determined by our roles, our relationships, or our accomplishments, but by the fact that we belong to God. In a world that constantly tries to define us by what we do or what we lack, God’s Word reminds us that our identity is rooted in being His children.

Family, both biological and spiritual, is central to God’s plan. At the cross, Jesus redefined family, binding Mary and John together as mother and son, showing that in Christ, we are all part of a new spiritual family. This family is not limited by bloodlines but is created and sustained by faith in Jesus. Every woman, whether a biological mother or not, has a vital role in nurturing and passing on faith within this family. The examples of Lois and Eunice, Timothy’s grandmother and mother, show us the power of sincere, everyday faith. Their influence was not marked by miracles or grand gestures, but by the steady, faithful sharing of God’s Word and love in the ordinary moments of life.

God works through the hidden, humble acts of love—through lullabies, prayers, and the sharing of Scripture at the kitchen table. Success in God’s eyes is not measured by the world’s standards, but by faithfulness in the small things. Even when it feels like our efforts are unseen or insignificant, God is at work, using every act of love and every word of faith to shape lives and build His kingdom. For those who find Mother’s Day painful—whether because of loss, longing, regret, or broken relationships—know that your identity is not defined by your past or your pain, but by who Jesus says you are: beloved, redeemed, and worth dying for.

So, continue to pass on the faith, to pray, to teach, to mentor, to love, and to serve. Whether you are a mother, a spiritual mentor, a teacher, or a friend, you are part of God’s family, called to help raise up the next generation. The faith that dwells in you is a gift to be shared, and God’s Spirit dwells in you, empowering you for this holy calling. Thank you for showing us Jesus, for loving and serving like Christ, and for being His beautiful, beloved daughters.

Key Takeaways

- Inherent Value Rooted in Creation
Before any role or relationship, every woman is valued simply because she is created in the image of God. This foundational truth means that worth is not earned or lost by what we do, but is a gift from the Creator Himself. In a world that tries to define us by our achievements or failures, God’s declaration of our value stands unshaken. Let this truth anchor your identity and bring peace to your heart. [04:37]

- Redefining Family Through Christ
At the cross, Jesus created a new kind of family, one not bound by blood but by faith. By entrusting Mary and John to each other, He showed that spiritual relationships in Christ are just as real and significant as biological ones. This means that everyone in the body of Christ—regardless of marital status or parenthood—has a vital role in nurturing and supporting one another. Our spiritual family is a place of belonging, purpose, and shared mission. [08:05]

- The Power of Ordinary Faithfulness
Lois and Eunice, Timothy’s grandmother and mother, shaped his faith not through extraordinary miracles but through consistent, everyday acts of faith—teaching, praying, and loving. God often hides His strength in what the world sees as weakness or insignificance, using the mundane to accomplish the miraculous. Never underestimate the impact of your daily faithfulness; God is at work in every small act of love and every whispered prayer. [14:20]

- God’s Grace in Our Imperfections and Pain
Mother’s Day can be a source of joy or pain, but our identity is not defined by our successes, failures, or wounds. In Christ, we are defined by His love, His sacrifice, and His resurrection. No past mistake or present struggle can separate us from the love and purpose God has for us. Rest in the truth that you are beloved, redeemed, and worth dying for, regardless of your circumstances. [19:06]

- Passing on a Dwelling Faith
Faith is not a visitor that comes and goes, but a resident that dwells within us, shaping every aspect of our lives. Like Lois and Eunice, we are called to let faith take up residence in our hearts and to pass it on to others—not just through words, but through a life lived in Christ. The Spirit’s presence in us guarantees that our efforts, however small, are empowered and made fruitful by God. Our calling is to keep sharing, nurturing, and loving, trusting that God’s Word will accomplish His purpose. [20:53]

### Observation Questions

1. In Genesis 2, what does the text say about why God created woman, and how is her value described before any mention of her role as a mother or helper?
2. When Jesus is on the cross in John 19, what does He do for Mary and John, and what new kind of relationship does He create between them? [08:05]
3. According to 2 Timothy 1:5, what does Paul highlight about Timothy’s faith and its connection to his mother and grandmother?
4. In the sermon, what are some of the ordinary, everyday ways Lois and Eunice passed on their faith to Timothy? [14:20]

---

### Interpretation Questions

1. Why is it significant that Eve’s value is established before she is called a wife or mother in Genesis? How does this challenge the way our culture often defines a woman’s worth? [04:37]
2. What does Jesus’ action at the cross (John 19) teach about the nature of spiritual family in the church? How might this affect how we view our relationships within the church? [08:05]
3. Paul describes the faith of Lois and Eunice as “dwelling” in them. What does it mean for faith to “dwell” in someone, rather than just visit occasionally? [20:53]
4. The sermon mentions that God works through “hidden, humble acts of love.” Why do you think God chooses to use ordinary faithfulness instead of only big, miraculous events? [14:20]

---

### Application Questions

1. The sermon says our worth is not based on what we do, but on being God’s beloved children. Are there ways you have let your roles, achievements, or failures define your value? What would it look like to let God’s truth anchor your identity this week? [04:37]
2. Jesus created a new spiritual family at the cross. Who in your church or community has been like spiritual family to you? How can you intentionally nurture those relationships, especially with people who may not have close biological family nearby? [08:05]
3. Think about the examples of Lois and Eunice. Who has passed faith on to you through simple, everyday actions? Is there someone you can thank or encourage this week for their faithfulness? [14:20]
4. Are there “small” acts of faithfulness in your daily life—like praying for someone, sharing a Bible story, or offering encouragement—that you sometimes overlook or feel are insignificant? How might God be using those acts in ways you can’t see? [15:47]
5. For those who find Mother’s Day painful, the sermon reminds us that our identity is not defined by our pain or regrets. Is there a past hurt or regret that you need to bring to Jesus for healing? What step can you take this week to rest in your identity as His beloved child? [19:06]
6. The sermon calls everyone—mothers, mentors, teachers, friends—to help raise up the next generation in faith. What is one specific way you can invest in someone younger in faith this month? [20:53]
7. The faith that “dwells” in us is meant to be shared. What is one practical way you can let your faith be visible in your home, workplace, or friendships this week? [20:53]

---

Closing Prayer Suggestion:
Thank God for the women and spiritual mentors in your life. Ask Him to help you see your value in Him, to use your everyday faithfulness, and to empower you to pass on faith to others.

Devotional

Day 1: Women Are Valued as God’s Precious Creation
From the very beginning, God intentionally created women as the crowning point of His creation, not merely as helpers or child-bearers, but as precious individuals made in His own image. Before any roles or relationships are assigned, Scripture highlights the inherent worth and dignity of women simply because they are God’s beloved daughters. This truth stands in contrast to the world’s voices that try to define worth by achievements, relationships, or roles. Instead, your value is rooted in being God’s creation, loved and cherished by Him, regardless of what you do or what others say. Let this truth shape your identity and give you confidence in your place in God’s family. [04:37]

Genesis 2:20-23 (ESV)
20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.
21 So the Lord God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and while he slept took one of his ribs and closed up its place with flesh.
22 And the rib that the Lord God had taken from the man he made into a woman and brought her to the man.
23 Then the man said, “This at last is bone of my bones and flesh of my flesh; she shall be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.”

Reflection: In what ways have you allowed your worth to be defined by roles, achievements, or others’ opinions rather than by your identity as God’s beloved creation? How can you remind yourself today of your true value in Christ?

Day 2: Jesus Creates a New Spiritual Family
At the cross, Jesus redefined family by binding together His followers in a new spiritual relationship, showing that in Him, we are all part of God’s family regardless of blood ties. In His final moments, Jesus entrusted His mother Mary to the care of John, and John to Mary, demonstrating that the bonds formed in Christ are deep, real, and enduring. This act reveals that God’s family is created through faith and the work of Jesus, not just through biological connections. As members of this spiritual family, each person—especially women—has a vital role to play in nurturing, supporting, and loving one another as brothers and sisters in Christ. [08:05]

John 19:26-27 (ESV)
26 When Jesus saw his mother and the disciple whom he loved standing nearby, he said to his mother, “Woman, behold, your son!”
27 Then he said to the disciple, “Behold, your mother!” And from that hour the disciple took her to his own home.

Reflection: Who in your church or community do you need to embrace as spiritual family today, and how can you intentionally show them the love and care of Christ?

Day 3: Passing On Faith Through Everyday Faithfulness
The sincere faith of Timothy’s grandmother Lois and mother Eunice was not marked by grand gestures or miracles, but by the steady, everyday sharing of God’s Word and love in the home. Their faith “dwelt” in them and overflowed into Timothy’s life through lullabies, Scripture memorization, correction, and care—ordinary acts that God used to shape a future leader in the church. This highlights the hidden beauty of vocation: God works powerfully through the small, unseen acts of faithfulness, using them to bless generations. No matter how mundane your daily routines may seem, God is present and at work in them, using your love and faith to point others to Jesus. [14:20]

2 Timothy 1:5 (ESV)
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well.

Reflection: What is one ordinary, everyday way you can intentionally share your faith with someone in your life today, trusting that God will use it for His purposes?

Day 4: You Are Defined by Who Jesus Says You Are
No matter your past, your pain, or your perceived failures, your true identity is found in who Jesus says you are: His beloved, redeemed, and precious child. Through baptism into Christ’s death and resurrection, you are made new, rescued, and given a place in God’s family. The world may measure success and worth by different standards, but God sees you through the lens of Christ’s love and sacrifice. Even when you feel inadequate or burdened by regrets, remember that you are not defined by what you have done or failed to do, but by the unchanging truth of your identity in Jesus. [19:06]

Romans 8:1-2 (ESV)
1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.
2 For the law of the Spirit of life has set you free in Christ Jesus from the law of sin and death.

Reflection: What regret, pain, or label do you need to surrender to Jesus today so you can live in the freedom of being defined by His love and grace?

Day 5: Faith Dwells and Grows Through Consistent Presence
Faith is not a fleeting visitor but a constant presence that dwells in the hearts of God’s people, just as it did in Lois and Eunice. This dwelling faith is nurtured through consistent engagement with God’s Word, prayer, and acts of love, even in the midst of struggle and imperfection. Jesus Himself “dwelt” among us, and now, through the Holy Spirit, God’s presence lives in us, empowering us to play our role in the body of Christ. Whether you are a mother, mentor, or friend, your faithful presence and encouragement help nurture faith in others and build up the family of God. [20:53]

John 1:14 (ESV)
And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we have seen his glory, glory as of the only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Reflection: Who can you encourage or walk alongside this week to help nurture a faith that dwells and grows, not just visits, in their life?

Quotes

And please don't miss this. In the verses that follow shortly after verse 20, Scripture helps us to clearly see that Eve, as woman, is presented wholly as Adam's partner and counterpart. Nothing is yet being said of her as...child bearer, because Scripture wants us to know that she is first and foremost valued for herself alone, because she is a creation of God, made in the image of God. [00:04:21]

In fact, before she's even known as Eve, the wife to Adam, or the mom to Cain and Abel, or even the worker who was there to be there with Adam, working and existing in creation, Scripture highlights the fact that her value is because she is a creation, a beautiful, created, precious daughter of God made in His own image. [00:04:50]

And so for all of the women, all of the moms, all of the sisters in Christ today, please hear this and know that you have inherent value because you are God's creation. Amen? That's what matters most, is that you are God's precious daughter. You belong to Jesus. [00:05:13]

We live in a sinful, broken world, where Satan and other competing voices, and even sometimes even our own negative self -talk tries to convince us otherwise that we are what we do. We are who we are married to. We are who our children are, which isn't true. [00:05:45]

God from the very get -go is trying to help all of us see, especially women, the crowning point of His creation, to know that you have value. You are loved. You have worth because you are God's child. It's not about how many child or children you may or may not have, but rather it's whose child you are that matters. [00:06:01]

Family roles matter. Being part of a family matters because we all have a role and a part to play. In fact, there's some pretty pivotal moments that happen all throughout Scripture where the family dynamic is shifting and changing. [00:07:06]

Mary is not speaking. She's not trying to fix things. She's simply just standing there. She realizes her imperfections. She knows that she's not perfect. She's sinful, just like every single one of us. But even in her depletion, in that moment. I can't imagine what it would be like to see your child, who you raised, who you love, who you bore, hanging there on the cross. Mary still had faith. [00:07:51]

She knew that her son, her physical son, was also the fully son of God, and that she had faith in Him. And she clung to the promise, and knew that she was a beautiful daughter of God, and knew this truth. And in the midst of her pain, she's clinging to hope. [00:08:15]

But through this simple act, Jesus is doing more than just arranging for Mary's future care. He's creating a new to fine at all, and that's why he can choose the 시, certainly can have to come unless he's drinking some Rozelle about to do one. And if you're her here to do a lot of the way at the end of the mat. Samekind of family. Not a blood family as we think of our blood relatives, but through his words he's creating a new spiritual family. [00:09:07]

He is literally binding Mary to John in the spiritual sense, and John to Mary as brothers and sisters now through himself, through what Jesus is about to accomplish on the cross. This is amazing because God is creating and reconciling back to himself his family, his creation through the atoning death and resurrection of his beloved son Jesus Christ. [00:09:24]

You see, this is how our God works. He creates family in the most unlikely places, through the most unlikely series and events. He does it through baptism. He does it through the church when he shares the word of God, when the word goes out, when our faith is shared amongst one another, and he does it ultimately through the cross and what Jesus did and accomplished for us. [00:09:49]

And because of Jesus today, all women, all of us, but especially all women, we all have a vital role to play in the life and the body of Christ. And we see Paul picking up on this all throughout the New Testament because Paul is...constantly championing and highlighting and pointing to how important family is and how God is working through relationships as brothers and sisters in Christ as he writes so many letters to the early church and to early believers. [00:10:10]

Timothy, I'm reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and now in your mother Eunice. Now I'm sure it dwells in you as well. Notice here what Paul is celebrating today. He's not celebrating the resume of Lois. He's not highlighting how amazing Eunice's parenting techniques were, but in faith he's helping us to see their sincere living dwelling faith in Christ that they were passing along. [00:10:43]

This is amazing because not only did Lois and Eunice understand that they had ultimate worth and value because they belonged to God as his precious redeemed daughters, but they knew the role that they got to play in the life of Timothy and in all those around him as they were able to pass their faith on to the next generation. [00:11:25]

Our role as God's creatures, as those He has redeemed back to Him, is to pass our faith along to the next generation. This is amazing. What a privilege, what an honor, what a blessing that we get to share Jesus, what He has done for us. We get to share it. We get to pay it forward to those around us. [00:11:46]

But what's incredible is that even before Paul had a chance to tell Timothy himself, his mother and grandmother were already doing the work and laying that foundation, they were, in a way, preaching to Timothy. They were passing the faith on. But they weren't doing it with robes, as we sometimes see, or they weren't doing it from a pulpit. No. Lois and Eunice, they were doing it with lullabies. [00:12:17]

They were passing faith on through memorizing scripture, sharing the stories of who this man Jesus is and was. They were doing it in the way that they corrected and cared for and guided little Timothy as he grew up into a boy and a young man. That is how they passed the faith along. This is the hidden beauty of vocation. [00:12:42]

Mother or not, if you are in the body of Christ, if you are part of the church, the family of God, you are all secondary faith influencers, not only to your children, but to those around you. In fact, what's really cool is the early church, the orthodox early, early, early church championed this idea and often spoke of mother church when referring to the body of Christ. [00:13:07]

Because they knew how important it was for everybody to grasp that biological children or not, we're all called to a spiritual parenthood of sorts. We all have a role to play in each other's lives. We see this in how Lois and Eunice lived out their faith, lived out their life for the sake of Timothy and those around them. [00:13:30]

And what's incredible about Scripture, Scripture? when it comes to specifically Lois and Eunice who we're looking at closely today, is that if you go into scripture and look, there's no miracles attached to what Lois and Eunice were doing in their lives. You know, they didn't have any spectacular visions, epiphanies, or prophecies from God that they gave to everybody else around them. No, Lois and Eunice, they did the grunt work, the ordinary, faithful, everyday work of being there. [00:13:51]

And that's what shaped Timothy as a future pastor, an evangelist, one who shared Christ. And that ripple effect carried on and on and on because this is how God works. He hides his strength in weakness. His glory, perhaps, is hidden in the diaper changing and the dishwashing that takes place. [00:14:20]

God hides himself through those ordinary mundane things that we maybe think aren't important, but they're actually huge. God uses...your simple acts of love and grace and kindness to be a blessing, of ultimately pointing to him, to those around you. He hides himself in the everyday activities that we so often think aren't a big deal. [00:14:55]

Mothers, women, sisters in Christ, you may wonder at time if what you are doing matters. You might wonder to yourself if what you're doing is actually enough. You might be led to believe in doubt sometimes, that your children, your students, perhaps even those you're mentoring are even listening to you. You might even be led to think that your mistakes outweigh your faithfulness. [00:15:18]

But know this, God is not measuring success the way the world does, and thank you God for that, that he does not measure success the way the world does. Rather, God is at work in the small things. The Bible stories that we share at the table, at the kitchen table, our faith shared in conversations as we're going to and from work and school and maybe sports afterwards, right? [00:15:47]

Faith is shared through the prayers, whisper it at night when you...You don't know that your kids are praying for them on your knees. You know, and God works in ways, especially when we're offering forgiveness and love and grace, when tempers are flaring, and we are pushed to our bounds and our limits, and like we feel like we're going to break. God is working through all of that. [00:16:09]

The faith of Lois and Eunice didn't save Timothy. Jesus saved Timothy. Amen? But Paul makes a good distinction here. He says, hey, Timothy, from childhood, you've been acquainted with the sacred writings. Which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus. Paul was always helping Timothy and us to see and keep the main thing the main thing. [00:16:29]

Because we are saved by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Right? The key is God's word. What Jesus has done for us. The key is not our family traditions that we pass on. That are good. That are worthy of celebrating and champion. It's not maybe our memories that we want to pass on. But rather, it's the truth of God's word which works faith by pointing to Jesus Christ crucified and risen and alive in us. [00:16:51]

You are not defined by your past or your pain. You are not defined by what you have done or failed to do, but rather you are defined by who Jesus says you are. Amen? You are defined by who Jesus says you are. And this happens through your baptism into the actual death and resurrection of Jesus himself. [00:18:52]

You are now his. You've been rescued back. You are the church, the bride of Christ himself. You were worth dying for, women. Do you know that? It's literally what Jesus did as he gave his life for you. You are that beautiful. You are that precious. And because of that, the old is gone. The new has come. [00:19:15]

Keep passing on the faith. Keep going in that amazing work that God has called you to. Keep praying. Keep teaching. Keep mentoring. Keep cheering on. Keep loving. Keep serving, because ultimately that's what God in Christ Jesus did for you. You are following the example of Jesus when you do this. [00:19:51]

Even if your children are grown and gone, you still have a role to play. Even if the people around you, maybe your husband or your children, don't listen to you as well as you want, know that God is using you. He's working through you. Even if you feel like you're a failure, remember this, God is using you. [00:20:08]

His words never return back to him empty, but God's word used and spoken through you will always come back to him and accomplish the purpose that which God determines. Amen? So cling to that. And if you're thinking to yourself, well, I don't have kids right now, don't think that you are without a role. We are the body of Christ. Amen? We all are family. We have a role to play. [00:20:25]

We are all called to help raise up the next generation as we all pass our faith along to those around us. We get to do this in how we cheer each other on, how we nurture one another, how we teach the word, and we walk with one another in humility and grace and forgiveness and kindness. [00:20:48]

I love what Paul said in one of the verses that you heard today. He said, faith that dwelt in Lois and Eunice dwelt. I love that. Not visited, not just showed up on holidays when it was convenient or easy, but it lived there through the struggle, through the trial, lived there. Dwelling is a constant and consistent thing, and we know this because this is what God has done for us in Christ Jesus. [00:21:05]

Jesus took on flesh and made his what among us? His dwelling among us. Jesus came and tabernacled, dwelt consistently, and now through a baptism, the Holy Spirit is that guarantee that lives and resides and dwells in us consistently so that we would know we are his creation, and we have a role to play. That's an amazing thing to think about. [00:21:30]
